CUFF-BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,495, dated October 13, 1896.

Beit known that I, GEORGE P. A. GU'NTHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Schwenksville, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cuff-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to so construct acuff-button that the body of the same can be removed from the frame or casing without destroying the latter, a further object being to provide for the use of a coin for the body of the button, whereby, in case of emergency, the coin can be removed and used as money, the means employed for holding the coin in place in the button being such as not to mutilate the coin and thereby deprive it of its value as money.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of a cult-button made in accordance with my in vention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, showing the parts in theirnormal relation to each other; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the retainer for the body of the button retracted, preparatory to the withdrawal of the same and of said body.

A represents a ring or frame, and B the body of the button, the latter consisting of a coin which is preferably fitted into an annular flanged cushion a: of felt or other elastic or semielastic material, said cushion fitting snugly in the ring A and being retained therein against outward movement by means of an overhanging lip or shoulder a on the ring. Against the inner flange of the cushion 0:, adjacent to the outer edge of the coin, bears an inwardly projecting annular flange 1), formed upon a dished retainer-plate D, the outer edge of the latter being adapted to a beveled recess d, formed in the ring A.

lVhen it is desired to remove the body B of the sleeve-button, the retainer D can be detached by drawing the same inward or rearward so as to contract the upper portion of the same and draw it out of the annular groove cl, the retainer being drawn inward until its upper portion is clear of the ring A, as shown in Fig. 3, and being then withdrawn laterally, so that the body B of the button can be first pushed inward clear of the ring A and then withdrawn laterally in the same manner.

To facilitate the drawing inward of the retainer D, the same is provided with openings f, with any one of which may be engaged a hook or other implement available for the purpose mentioned.

By the use of a coin for forming the body of the sleeve-button the latter always hasan intrinsic value equal to that of the coin, and in case of emergency the coin can be readily removed and used as money, and this can be done without mu tilating the coin or the frame or casing of the button, nor, owing to the use of the pad or cushion 0c, is there any wear of the coin during the use of the button. Hence the coin is not deprived of any part of its value as money, while the frame 01' casing of the button is available for the reception of another coin when it is desired to again equip the same in this manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a frame or casing, a coin or like body contained therein, and an elastic retainer adapted to a groove in said frame or casing and having a projecting portion overlapping said coin and holding the same in place.

2. The combination of a frame or casing, a coin or like'body contained therein, an elastic retainer adapted to a groove in said frame or casing and having a portion overlapping the coin so as to hold the same in place, said elastic retainer being contractible so that it can be withdrawn from engagement with the groove in the casing.

3. The combination of a frame or casing, a coin or like body contained therein, and a curved or dished elastic retainer having its outer portion adapted to a groove in the frame or casing and having an inwardly-projecting flange for retaining the body of the button in place.
