To all whom, t may conce/vt:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seals for Bags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is primarily additional to 'with a flat front and with a dome-shaped back to which the threading-holes are con- `lined.
The present invention consists in combining with a seal-disk of that description a spear part to aid in inseparably attaching the seal to the neck of a bag, said soft-metal rivet serving to secure the inner end of such spear part.
The invention further consists in the combination with the sheet-metal seal-disk having a flat front of a label supported upon said front and a rim part inseparably attaching the label, the whole being` so constructed and arranged as to be secured in place in the act of uniting the parts of the seal-disk and so as to reinforce the circumferential seam of the latter.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this speciiication as part thereof.
Figures l and 2 are respectively a face view and a sectionaledge view of the labelattaching rim part of the improved seal. Figs. 3 and 4 are face and sectional edge views of its label. Figs. 5 and 6 are face and sectional edge views of the flat part of the seal-disk. Figs. 7 and 8 are back and sectional vie'ws of the convex part of the seal-disk. Figs. 9 and 10 are end and side views of the soft-metal rivet, showing the spear part attached thereto. Fig. 11 is a face view of the seal-'disk with attached. spear part and label formed by uniting the parts shown in Figs. 1-10. Fig. 12 is an edge view projected from Fig. 11. Fig. 13 is a back view of the seal-disk with the shacklecord in place, illustrating the mode of applying the seal to the neck of a bag,

Like reference characters refer to like parts in all the figures.
ln producing the improved seal a sheetmetal rim part a, having a circumferential fiange 1 and a hole 2 in said flange, is placed flange upward on a table or bench. A label t is placed face downward within saidilange, and a fiat disk part c, of sheet metal, having a circumferential flange 3, a hole 4 in said flange, and an embossed curb 5 concentric with said flange, is placed with its flat front downward upon said label. A spear part d is then passed outwardly through said holes 2 and 4 Aand into an embrasure 6 in said curb 5, and a soft-metal rivet e, cast fast on the` inner end of said spear part, is seated within said curb. A convex (concave convex) disk part f, of sheet metal, having an outwardly-projecting rim 7, a notch 8 in said rim, and a central hole 9, is then placed with its concave side downward within said flanges 1 and 3, with its notch 8 embracing the spear part d and with the uppermost end of the rivet e within said. hole 9. The parts are then inseparably united with each other at a single operation by means of a suitable plunger or die acting upon said iianges 1 and 3 to turn them inward upon the rim 7 of the conveX disk part f and acting at the same time upon the protruding upper end of the rivet e to fasten it in place. The parts above described are thus made to form a hollow compressible seal-disk of sheet metal containing a soft-metal rivet with a protruding spear part protruding in the plane of the circumferential seam, by which the parts of the seal-disk are united with each other and rigidly fastened in place by means of said seam and of the central rivet, the flat front of said seal-disk being provided with a label in- Separably attached thereto by a rim part, which serves additionally to reinforce saidv circumferential seam of the seal-disk, as shown in Figs. 11, 12, and 13.
The label l) may be provided with a serial number, as represented'in Figs. 3 and 11, or with any other printed matter or the like, but is primarily designed and adapted to receive as an inseparable part of each seal a name, date, initial, or the like stamped or written thereon to identify the individual seal. The spear part d has a sharp-pointed and Fig. 14 1 outer end and is made of sufficient length to TOO protrude from the` seal-disk to the required extent.
The convex disk part f is constructed, in addition to the features already mentioned, with threading-holes 1, 2, 3', 4, 5', 6, 7, and 8', preferably in two pairs, to receive the oord, and a strong flexible cord g is threaded through these holes at the factory in the manner shown in Fig. IE5-that is to say, in such a way as to form a pair of attachingloops c and b at the same edge of the sealdisk as the protruding end of the spear part d and a loop c at the opposite edge, which is directly connected with the respective attaching-loops.
Preliminary to the sealing operation the protruding spear end is thrust into the neck of the bag that is to be sealed, and the attaching-loops c and b are adjusted around the same. A suitable seal-press is then applied which affords a suitable support for the flat front of theI seal-disk and includes a reciprocating plunger or its equivalent adapted to contact with the convex side of the sealdisk, as represented by the arrow h in Fig. l2, and to compress the same, as illustrated vby the dotted lines at i in Fig. 14, so as to render the seal-disk practically solid, with the lead of the rivet c interlocking with the cord g within the seal-disk and preventing the withdrawal of the cord or any part thereof from within the seal-disk.
The attaching-loops c and b ofthe cord may be tightened around the neck of the bag by any approved means. Preferably the seal-press itself is adapted to tighten the same by interacting with said loop c at the opposite edge of the seal-disk; but this forms no part of the present invention.
The threading-holes l, 2, 3', 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8/ may obviously be increased or reduced in number, so as to provide for only one or more than two attaching-loops c b, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. A seal for bags having, in combination with a suitable neck-embracing cord, a hollow compressible sealdisk composed of sheet-metal disk parts interlocked with eachother by a circumferential seam, a central soft-metal rivet interposed between said disk parts, and a neck-penetrating spear p art the inner end of which is fast in said rivet and which protrudes from said rivet through said disk parts.
2. A cording-seal for bags having, in combination with a suitable attaching-loop cord, a hollow compressible seal-disk composed of sheet-metal disk parts forming a flat front and a dome-shaped back the latter providedl with threading-holes, the two being interlocked with each other by a circumferential seam, a central soft-metal rivet interposed between said disk parts, and a spear part the inner end of which is fast in said rivet and which protrudes from said seal-disk in the plane of said seam.
3. A cording-seal for bags having, in combination with a suitable attaching-loop cord, a hollow compressible seal-disk composed of sheet-metal disk parts forming respectively a flat front and dome-shaped back the latter provided with threading-holes, the two being interlocked with each other by a circumferential seam, a label in contact with said flat front, and a label-attaching rim part of sheet metal having a circumferential flange and adapted to be fastened in place in the act of interlocking the disk parts with each other and to reinforce said circumferential seam.

A cording-seal for bags having, in combination with a suitable attaching-loop cord, a hollow compressible seal-disk composed of sheet-metal disk parts forming respectively a Hat front and dome-shaped back .the latter provided with threading-holes, said disks having respectively an inwardly-projecting embossed curb and a hole central with referlocked with each other by a circumferential seam, a label in contact with said fiat front, a
label-attaching rim part of sheet metal having a circumferential flange and adapted to be fastened in place in the act of interlocking the sheet-metal disk parts with each other and to reinforce said circumferential seam, and a soft-metal rivet seated within said curb and protruding through said hole.
5. A cording-seal for bags having, in combination with a strong and flexible cord, a hollow compressible seal-disk of sheet metal composed of circular disk parts one of them having a circumferential ange provided with a hole and the other correspondingly notched, the two forming a flat Afront and a dome-shaped back, the latter provided with holes through which said cord is threaded to form attaching and tightening loops, and the two being permanently interlocked with each other by a circumferential seam, a label in contact with said flat front, a label-attaching rim part of sheet metal having a circumferential lflange provided with a hole matching the hole first named and adapted to be fastened in place in the act of interlocking the sheetmetal disk parts with each other andfto reinforce said circumferential seam, and a spear part protruding from within said seal-disk in the plane of said seam through the holes in said flanges, substantially as hereinbefore specific EDWARD J.
