WILLIAM F. BRUNSSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. DIERKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MILK-CAN SEAL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 30, 19Q6. Serial No- 298,609.
Patented Aug. 7, 1906.
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Milk-Can Seal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for sealing milk-cans, the object being to provide a sealing or cover-securing device of simple construction and so arranged that it cannot be removed from the cover Without first breaking the seal of soft metal.
I will describe a milk-can seal embodyin my invention and then point out the nove features in the appended claims.
Reference is to e had to the-accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of'reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a can, showing a seal embodying my invention thereon. "Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation opposite that of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front view of the locking device for the sealing-chain. Fig. 5 is a prospective view thereof, and Fig. 6 is a section on the line as m of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the can, and 2 the cover thereof, of the usual form.
The sealing device comprises a chain 3, which at one end has divergent members 4, the ends of said divergent members being secured to the can by soldering or other means. At the opposite side of the can is a locking device consisting of a metal strip 5, which is soldered or otherwise secured to the can and having at its upper end a projection 6, provided; with an opening 7, and at its lower end are outwardly-extended lugs 8,whic]1 are s aced apart and provided with perforations.
y providing the chain with the divergent members 4 it will not be possible to slip the chain off the cover.
In the operation the chain is to be passed over the cover, as indicated in the drawings, thence through the opening 7, and a link of the chain engaged between the lugs 8, after which a sealing-plug 9 of soft metal is passed through the lugs and also through the link engaged by the lugs.
To release the chain, it is only necessary to draw its free end outward with sufiicient force to break the soft-metal seal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a can and a cover therefor, of a chain for passing over the cover, the said chain having divergent members secured to one side of the can, and a locking device on the opposite side of the can consisting of a strip of metal having an outward projection provided'with an opening, and also having spaced perforated lugs.
2; The combination with a milk-can and a cover therefor, of a sealing device comprising a chain having divergent members secured to one side of the can, a locking device on the opposite side of the can consisting of astrip of metal having an outward projection at its upper end, provided with an opening, outward-projecting lugs at its lower end, said lugs being erforated, and a sealin -p1ug passing throug the perforations of t e lugs and through a link of the chain engaged between said lugs.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. BRUNSSEN.
