COUNTERWEIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
Application filed December 7, 1908. Serial No. 466,346.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRoN H. DETRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in .Counterweights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to counterweights which are attached by flexible connection to window sashes and the like, for the purpose of supporting the weight thereof and holding them in balance. Such weights have usually been made of cast metal and with the object of cheapness very inferior metal has been used. From rough handling, to which this class of material is always subject, a considerable percentage of loss by breakage of the eyes has usually resulted and even when the cheapest materials possible have been selected for the purpose of making castings, the expense has been considerable.
My invention provides a counterweight for such purposes, which is formed from a sheet metal casing adapted to hold material which will add weight thereto. The form is such that the greatest economy of space in the window casings and the like can be had, that weights passing each other are guarded against binding in the window casings it they strike against each other therein, and the eye by which the cord or other connection is attached is so protected that it is not subject to damage in shipment and handling. The bail which forms the eye is so shaped in connection with the casing that the cord is readily introduced and secured. And the casing is easy of construction and cheap to manufacture.
The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents my improved window weight partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Further describing my invention with reference to the drawings, 1 1s a shell or caslng which is narrowed at the point 2 and given a reverse turn 3, in which is held a correspondingly reversely formed fold t of the top 5. The said top is provided with a depression in which is placed the bail 6, whose ends pass through corresponding slots in the top and are formed into the hooks 7, by which it is securely fastened thereto. The eye 8 is thus formed within the top or head and the whole is so contoured that a cord introduced on one side of the bail will follow into and through the opening 8 and pass out on the other side. The bail 6 should be placed far enough within the depression of the top that it is well within the protection of the edges 9. The slanted portion 10 be low such edges is adapted when striking against corresponding portions on the lower ends of similar weights to cause them to pass readily without being stuck when moving in a window or similar casing.
in Flg. 1 the lower end of the device is shaped the same as the upper part, a bail eye being provided therein. By this means two weights may be connected together in alinement with each other if additional weight is desired. If this is not desired the eye and depression at the lower part of the weight may be omitted, but it is desirable that the lower part should be provided with the slanting edges, thus providing for ready passage of the weights by each other. The casing 1 should be filled with suitable material for which metal drosses and slag are well adapted, and which provide a very inexpensive filling material of high specific grgvity 1 claim:
1. In a counterweightthe combination of a casing, and an end piece secured thereto, the said end piece being provided with a crest or rim slanted downwardly and outwardly to act as a tender and inwardly to provide an eye seat.
2. In a counterweight, the combination of a casing and end pieces secured thereto and having a recessed portion uniformly curved inwardly and then outwardly, and an eye secured in the recess transversely of the said curved portion of the recess wall.
3. In a counterweight the combination of a casing narrowed at the end, and an end piece having a slanting rim fitted over the narrowed end of the casing and secured thereto.
a. In a counterweight the combination of a casing, an end piece provided with a crest secured outside the casing and provided with my hand, this 8th day of F ebruary A. D. a recess inwardly and downwardly sloped 1909, in the presence of two subscribing witfrom said crest toward the center. of said nesses. I I 7 end piece, an eye seated in the recess and MYRON H. DETRI-CK. 5 protected by the rim of the end piece, and Witnesses:
weighting material inclosed in said casing. (1. K. CHAMBERLAIN,
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set A. S. PHILLIPS.
