Be it known that 1, LEVI F. Rooms, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a draft gear and. has for its primaryobject to construct a draft gear the component parts of which may be more readily assembled and disi assembled.
An object of the invention is the novel manner of'supporting theresilient means so that the, coil springs may be readily arrangedin place and removed for obvious reasons. g
'Besides the above my invention is distinguished in the manner of housing the coil springs so that the same will be protected at all times.

Again referring to the drawings 'the numeral 1 designates a draft beam hollow at its ends in which is slidably mounted the shank 2 of a coupling member 3. This shank has passed therethrough a tongue or key 4;, the end portions of'which project into and are slidably mounted in casings 5 and 6.
Each casing consists of a body portion 7 mounted in an opening 8 in the draft beam and rigidly secured to the draft beam in any suitable manner, such for instance as by rivets 9. Each casing includes a cover 10 which may be stamped as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, or cast as illustrated in the remaining figures of the drawings, The cover 10 is provided with ears 11 which are pivoted by a bolt or pin 13. it will be seen that had to the interior of the casing. Arranged 1n the casing and acting directly against the key 1 are coil springs 14 which take care of the proper movement of the coupling member and absorb excessive shocks. Each cover 10 is formed with a guide way 15 which receives the extreme end of the key 4 and prevents twisting thereof and assures the proper travel of-the coupling member.
If found necessary in practice to increase the resistance of the spring, blocks of wood 16 may be lodged in the guide way 15 in a positlon to cause a rubbing action between the blocks and the springs, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing.
'The construction illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 is identical with that just described with the exception that the body 17 of the casing is bolted directly to the interior of the draft beam. The strip 18 has a hinge connection with the cover 19 as indicated at 20.
