Description

S. ROSOPSKY. WATCH GUARD. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 26, 1909.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
WITNESSES:
MAW $1 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
SOLOMON ROSOFSKY, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
WATCH-GUARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON RosorsKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVatch Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in safety-retainers or guards for watches and the like; and, the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel device which is adapted to be arranged and secured within the pocket of wearing apparel to prevent the watch from being lost or stolen, but the device being of such a construction that the watch can be easily withdrawn by the wearer of the garment.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple and effective means for securing a watch in the pocket of a garment, and guarding the same against accidental or surreptitious removal therefrom; and, the invention has for its further object to provide a novel means for detachably securing the safetyretainer or watchguard in thepocket of the garment, as well as the provision of a novel means for locking said safety retainer or watch-guard against the removal of the watch retained therein.
A further object of this is to provide a safety-retainer for watches which not only guards said watch from accidental or surreptitious removal, but also provides a means for preserving the polished or engraved cases of the watches against scratching or marring, which is generally the result of carrying them in the pocket in the ordinary way.
\Vith the various objects of my present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel watch-guard hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the several novel arrangements and combinations of the Various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and then embodied in the clauses of the claims which are Specification of Letters Patent.

appended to and which form a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an exterior View of the watchpocket of a piece of wearing apparel or garment, the said view showing in dotted outline the position of a safety-retainer or watch-guard embodying the principles of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the inner side of said wearing apparel or garment adjacent to said watch-pocket, said view illustrating, more particularly, a novel means for securing said safety-retainer or watch-guard within said watch-pocket. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section, said section being taken on line 3'3 in said Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rear view of said safety-retainer or watch-guard removed from the pocket. Fig. 5 is a face View of the frame-work of said safety-retainer or watch-guard, the covering of the same being removed. Fig. 6 is an end view of said frame-work; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of said frame-work, the covering of the same being shown in dotted line; Fig. 8 is a detail face view of the framework of said safety-retainer or watchguard, but illustrating in connection therewith a slightly modified form of locking device; and Fig. 9 is an enlarged horizontal section of the same, said section being taken on line 99 in said Fig. 8, looking in the direction of the arrow w.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 10 indicates a portion of a garment or wearing apparel provided with a watch-pocket 11 and a back or rear lining 12. Arranged so as to slip into and to be arranged within the said watch pocket 11 is a safety-retainer or watch-guard, em bodying the principles of my present in vention, the same comprising a main frame 13, constructed preferably, of a single piece of wire, in the following manner. The said wire is bent upwardly at each end so as to form suitable sideframes M, each sideframe thus formed being provided with a perforated flattened portion 15. The opposite ends of said wire are then bent toward each other, so as to be parallel to each other, or substantially so, and extend each to the opposite side-frame 1 1-, so as to form suitable mouthframes 16, the free ends or portions 17 of said wire are then bent downwardly and are provided with perforated flattened portions 18 adapted to register with the respective flattened portions 15 of said side-frames 1 1, said parts being pivotally connected together by means of a rivet or pintle 19 thus forming and completing a retaining frame comprising a pair of hinged or pivotally connected frame-sections, as will be clearly evident. Owing to this peculiar construction of frame-work, the tendency of the mouth or opening of the same, due to the torsion of the wire of which said frame-work is constructed, is always to re main open, when not held closed, by means of a locking device, which when released permits the frame-sections to automatically spring open, as will hereinafter appear. The means for retaining said frame-sections in their closed or locked relations, to safely retain and guard a watch from being accidentally or surreptitiously removed from the pocket, consists, essentially, of a suitably formed spring-arm 20 suitably secured to one of said flattened portions 18, or to any other suitable and convenient point. This spring-arm is provided at its upper end with a laterally extending member 21 formed at one end in a right angled tongue or lug 22 adapted to always remain in sliding engagement with one of said side-frames 14, while the opposite end of said member is provided with a catchpiece or hasp, as 23, adapted to engage the adjacent end-portion 17 and hold the same. The means for releasing said catch-piece or hasp 23 comprises a push-button or fingerpiece 241 connected by means of a shank 25 to the upper portion of said spring-arm 20, said shank 25 extending outwardly between said side-frame 14f and the adjacent endportion 17. By pushing with the finger upon said push-button or finger-piece 24, the said spring-arm 20 is forced inwardly thereby causing the said catch-piece or hasp 23 to release its hold upon said end-portion 17 so as to permit the frame-sections to spring apart and open the mouth of said frame-work, as will be clearly evident. The said wire frame-work is covered to form a pocket 26 by means of a suitable fabric, said fabric being made in the form of a bag or pocket in which the watch is placed and which also serves as a protection against scratching or marring the polished or engraved surface of the watch which is retained therein. One means for securing said safety-retainer or watch-guard within the pocket 11 of the wearing apparel or garment is shown more particularly in Figs. 2, 3 and 41 of the drawings. Secured upon the back of said pocket 26, hereinabove mentioned, by means of an inclosingportion of fabric 27 is an elongated-plate 28,
provided with outwardly extending shanks 29, which are located at a suitable distance from each other, and project through suitable perforations or holes in said inclosing portion of the fabric 27. Each shank 29 is provided with a suitable head 30.
WV hen the safety-retainer or guard is placed within the pocket 11 of the wearing apparel or garment, these shanks 29 extend outwardly from the back thereof and the heads 30 press against the pocket 11 and lining 12, substantially in the manner shown. A locking bar 31 which is provided with a pair of side-bars, as 32, which are suitably joined together at their ends, provide a retaining device formed with an elongated opening or space 33, said bars 32 being made with outwardly bowed portions, as 3 1, which provide suitable receiving portions 35, which are arranged upon the previously mentioned shanks 29 in the following manner :-The heads 30 of said shanks 29, covered as they are with the fabric of said pocket 11 and the lining 12, are thrust through the said receiving portions 35 of said locking-bar 31, the said bar 31 being then pushed sidewise so as to bring the shanks 29 into said elongated openings or spaces 35 so as to squeeze the fabric of said pocket 11 and lining 12 between said shanks 29 and said side-bars 32, with the head 30 of each shank 29 projecting over said sidebars 32 and thereby preventing the lockingbar from slipping outwardly and away from said shanks 29, the friction between the said fabric and the shanks 29 and side-bars 32 being sufficient to prevent any return sideslipping of said locking bar 31. The safetyretainer or watch-guard being thus secured in operative position within the pocket 11 of said wearing apparel or garment, a watch is placed therein and the frame-sections are pressed together and held in their locked engagement by the locking-device hereinabove described, until the latter are released by pressing the pushbutton or fingerpiece 241, thus securely retaining said watch against accidental or surreptitious removal.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 8 and 9 of the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated therein a slightly modified construction of locking device for locking said frame-sections 16 together. This modified device comprises a pair of horizontally extending tongues or members 36, one tongue being secured to each sideframe 1+ by means of rivets 37, or other suitable fastening means, said tongues terminating in a catch-piece 38 adapted to engage the respectively adjacent end-portions 17. Each rivet 37 is provided with a shoulder 39 and an outwardly extending shank a0 formed at its free-end with a head or push-piece l1. By engaging said push-pieces 11 with the fingers and pressing the same toward each other, the catch-pieces 38 are caused to release their hold upon said end-portion 17, thereby permitting the frame-sections 16 to spring apart and thus opening the safetyretainer or watch-guard to permit the removal of the watch from within the watchguard and the pocket of the garment.
It will be clearly evident, that the watch may be used in the ordinary manner when connected with a watch-chain, fob, or guard, since the latter will extend between the frame-sections 16 when closed since the space between them is sufficiently wide to permit the arrangement of such parts between the frame-sections, but the space'not being wide enough to allow the passage of the watch therethrough.
I am aware that changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of my present invention, as described in the foregoing speei fication and as defined in the claims appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as herein shown and described, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction thereof.
