Be it known that I, HENRY A. 7001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Dickinson, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mittens for use in the care of insane or incompetent persons, in which I have a combination of an outer and an inner mitten, the one attached to the other and having mounted on the wrist means for securely holding the mitten on the hand.
The objects of my improvement are to provide a means protecting the hands of an insane person so as to prevent their use of the hands to do injury to their own person or to property thereby. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3, 8 of Fig. 1.

It very often happens that insane persons are liable to injure themselves or to injure property or the persons in charge of them with their fingers. Thus, for the purpose of remedying this difficulty I have provided the devices hereinafter described.
My device consists of a mitten constructed in the manner and form following: I have the outer mitten A constructed in the ordinary shape, except having no thumb and constructed of some coarse stiff material such as heavy canvas or leather. For the purpose of ventilation I have inserted in it the eyelet holes 1, 2, 3, 41, 5 etc, both on its front and back sides. These holes may be either with eyelets or without. To the inside of the mitten there is attached an inner mitten B made of some tough but light and flexible material and provided with holes for ventilating purposes, said holes or openings being either with or without eyelets as shown by 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 as shown in Fig. 3. This inner mitten or lining is stitched to the outer mitten along the line C C. The outer mitten being somewhat stiff and unyielding while the inner mitten is flexible, so that when the hand is bent to grasp anything it slips Specification of Letters Patent.

within the mitten and the wearer is unable to grasp with the hand. The series of holes or'eyelet holes above mentioned allow free passage of air and prevents the hand from sweatin For the purpose of fastening the mitten irmly on the wrist I have the strap D which passes around the wrist of the mitten through the loops E and E being mounted on the wrist. To this strip is attached in the ordinary way the locking buckle F.
In operation I unlock the locking buckle F by unlocking the lock G and removing the tongue H from the strap D, first slipping the strap around the wrist so as to slip the buckle out from under the loop E. The hand is then slipped within the mitten B; the strap D buckled and locked and the strap buckle slipped back again underneath the loop E so as to be hidden and to prevent any possible self injury from the buckle F. If the wearer attempts to grasp anything, the yielding inner mitten B slips against the interior of the outer mitten A and thus the hand is unable to grasp readily an object.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a mitten of the character described, the combination with a stiff casing, of a flexible casing secured therein, both of said casings having suitably reinforced ventilating openings formed therein, supplemental stiff casings secured to the wrist portion of the mitten and projecting therefrom to provide a loop, a strap passing around the wrist of the device, a buckle carried by one end of the strap and having a tongue adapted to engage the other end of the strap, and locking lugs adapted to be forced out from the tongue to engage the sides of the buckle to lock the tongue in position, the strap being adapted to slide on the wrist to bring the buckle when locked beneath one of the supplemental casings to protect said buckle.
2. In a mitten a palm piece and secured thereto a backing both composed of stiff material, the palm piece and back having eyelet holes or openings through the same and mounted within said mitten a loose inner mitten secured at its lower edge to the inner side of the outer mitten, said loose inner mitten having apertures therein; a strap mounted about the wrist of the outer mitten and adapted to receive the lock by passing through loops attached to the outer mitten Wrist, a buckle carried by one end of the strap, and a locking device carried by the buckle for securing the tongue thereof in engagement with the free end of the strap.
3. In combination with a flexible hand receiving pouch, a stifl casing therefor, and means for locking the device in position on the wearer and a second casing secured to the main casing and projecting therefrom therein to conceal and protect the same.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flexible hand receiving pouch, of a stiff casing therefor, and means for locking the device in position on the wearer, there being a series of ventilating openings formed in the pouch and casing.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flexible hand receiv ing pouch, of a stiff casing therefor, means providing for the ventilation of the device, means for locking the device in position upon the wearer, and means for concealing and protecting the lock.
