Description
c. A. ROBERTSON. CLOTHES POUNDER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT'.24,1908.
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
ym themes CULLEN A. ROBERTSON, OF MILLEDGEVILLE, GEORGIA.
CLOTHES-POUNDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1909.
Application filed September 24, 1908. Serial No. 454,527.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CULLEN A. ROBERT- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milledgeville, in the county of Baldwin and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clotheslounders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description-of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes pounder-s, and comprises the production, of a pounder provided with suction means.
One of the objects of the invention is the production of a clothes pounder comprising a hollow head formed integrally with the handle thereof, and with a flexible band arranged around the upper portion of the head, the head being formed with openings so that the expansion of the flexible band caused by the quick depression of the pounder will allow considerable water to be forced into the hollow head which may be elevated by raising the pounder.
With these and other objects in view, the inventionconsists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. 7 1
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of my improved pmindcr; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional central view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken online 33 of Fig. 1. I
pounder head above said hollow portion,
The numeral 1 designates the handle which is provided with an enlarged head '2 formed with a hollow 3' in its lower portion. The head 2 is of col'lsiderahly greater diameter than the handle 1 and is formed with spaced transverse openings 4 and is inwardly rcinforced at The upper portion of the head 2 consists of an integral shoulder 6, having an annular groove 7, said shoulder 6 being above the openings 4, which communicate with the hollow 3, and between groove 7 and the plane of the openings 4 is a deep groove 8. Below the openings 4 a third annular groove 9 is formed on the head 2 for the reception of a securing band, and the lower portion of the head is reinforced by a sleeve 10, preferably of galvanized iron or similar material, said sleeve being formed with a flared lower end 11.
A flexible textile band 12, preferably of fine texture is provided with a pair of securing bands or rings 13 and 14, which are adapted .to be seated in the grooves 7 and 9 and is secured around the head 2 so as to loosely embrace. the annular groove 8 and the outer ends of the openings 4.
When the pounder is forced downward against the clothes in a boiler in the usual manner, Water will be forced into the hollow 3, through the openings 4 and into the groove 8. As the pounder is raised the textile hand 12 will be sucked against the openings 4 so as to temporarily close the same thereby preventing the water in the annular groove 8 and in the hollow 3 from freely discharging. V hen the textile band 12 raised out of the water, the water held thereby will be gradually discharged so as to cover the upper clothes of the boiler.
I claim as my invention A' clothes pounder comprising a handle, a. pounder head at one end of the handle, said head having a hollow lower portion, a series of transverse openings communicating with the interior of its hollow portion and an annular groove in its outer face above the said hollow portion, a reinforcing band encircling the hollow portion of the pounder head and a flexible band secured to the over said transverse openings and said annular groove, and adapted to produce a sac tion through said transverse openings when the pounder is raised.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.

J. WV. OGDEN, W. F. FLOYD.
