IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES POUNDERS AND WASHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,499, dated July 24, 1877 application filed April 27, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. GEORGE L. FISHER, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Clothes Pounders and Washers, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention is an improvement upon that described in Letters Patent N 0. 143,901, granted to Samuel F. Hawley October 21,1873, and is designed to increase the usefulness and efficiency of the same and, for a further understanding of the invention, reference is made to that patent.

My improvements are intended, first, to prevent the clothes from catching on the central stem of the smaller cone-shaped washer, and being torn by contact therewith. This I accomplish by the employment of a small additional cone at the end of the said central stem, the cone being inverted and perforated, as hereinafter fully described. The addition of the small perforated cone also prevents the marking of the clothes and increases the atmospheric action of the washer, thereby adding to its general efiiciency.

My improvements are designed, secondly, to protect certain parts of the washer which, in the reciprocating movement to which they are subjected in the act of washing, become bruised, mashed, and disarranged by constant contact with each other. The device employed by me to effect this result also causes the pounder to act more smoothly, and with less noise, and with a degree of elasticity highly beneficial to the general action of the machine. These results are eflected by the application of a rubber ring at the end of the central stem, which receives the bottom of the outer hollow stem, smaller cone.

My invention consists, thirdly, in bracing or supporting the inner and smaller cone to carrying the inner and its stem by a solid partition or plate, instead of by separate braces, the latter catching and tearing the clothes and impeding the action of the washer.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a washer embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view looking at the mouth of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in both views.

The central stem at is provided with the small removable inverted cone b, which is perforated to admit of the free entrance of the water. The cone b gives the pounder a better bearing on the clothes, and prevents marking or cutting of the same, which has been experienced when the end of the tube only has been forced on the clothes.

The inverted cone, it is seen, increases the area of the stem to at its base, which increase of area causes the stem to become, in practice, an additional cone, and thus converts an element of the machine, hitherto performing only the function -of a support, into an effective auxiliary to the larger cones. The atmospheric action of the machine is found to be thereby increased, and the efliciency of the washer enhanced about thirty per cent.

The rubber ring heretofore mentioned is shown by c, and its use and efiect are apparent. It its seen that jar and noise in working must be effectually lessened by itsuse.

As a substitute for the braces connecting the inner cone to the outer tube or stem, I employ the aforementioned solid plate-partition, marked d, which, it is seen, cannot engage with the clothes, which wrap over separate braces, and thereby encumber the action of the washer. The use of the plate-partition also greatly strengthens and cheapens the machine.

I claim as my invention, as an improvement on that described in Letters Patent No. 143,901-
