IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent o. 144,021, dated October 258, 1373; application filed July 26, 1673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAlnEs H. DUGAN and GEORGE MONGRIEF, of Stonehani, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improve nient in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specication:
Our invention consists of a simple, cheap, and efficient arrangement of an umbrella-top, so as to revolve upon the handle to relieve it when strong gusts of wind blow against it quartering, or when'the top strikes against other umbrellas or other objects in crowded places. The said arrangement consists of a notched revolving ring for the ribs, between two collars on the handle, and a revolving notched ring on the runner, between two collars on it.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the unlbrella-fralne, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of it.
The ribs A are jointed to the loose revolving collar B on the handle O, between the two stationary collars QE, and the braces F jointed to a revolving' ring, G, on the runnerH, between the stationary collar l and the detachable collar J. The collar J screws onto the upper end of the runner to allow the ring to be put on and then secure it. The collar D is aflange of the tip K, which screws on the top of the Witnesses OWEN RAFFERTY, WILLIAM MGLAUGHLIN.
