IMPROVEMENT IN BILLIARD-CHALK HOLDERS.
Specification forming .part of Letters Patent No. 169,488, dated November 1575; application led l September 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SIMoNToN, of Clarinda, in the county of .Page and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Billiard-Chalk Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
holders 5 and it consists in a novel construction of a case for the chalk, in combination with a plunger and adjusting-screw; also, in combining with the said case sandpaper properly backed to prevent breaking the chalk, as will be hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a square casing, open at one end, made of leather or other material, and which is provided with oriiices a b, hereinafter described'.
B designates a square piece of chalk, conforming to the shape ofthe casing, and arranged in the bottom thereof, the exposed end of which is made concave, for the purpose of fitting the leather tip of a billiardcue while chalking it. The concave end of the chalk, when in its case A, is exposed at an orifice, a., through the case, as shown in Fig. 2, by which means tl1e,cuetip can be easily chalked. C designates a leather backing arranged on the inner side of the casing A, between which and the side of this` casing' is applied a piece of sand-paper, which is exposed at an orice, b, on said side, and which is preferably made concave, for the purpose of roughening the end of the cue. The object of this backing is to prevent the cue from rubbingagainst the chalk and breaking it. D
represents a block-plunger applied in casing A on the top of the chalk B, which block is provided with a thumb-screw, d, passing through its entire length, for the purpose of by strings h, for the purpose of holding it securely in the case.
The advantages of my improved chalkholder are mainly in preventing the clothes and hands ofthe player from being soiled; and another advantage is, that when the chalk wears-out it can .be readily renewed by untying the strings and removing the plunger; so, in like manner, can the sandpaper be removed and renewed when worn out..
In order that the chalk may be always at hand, I have provided a string, by which it can be hung up in a convenient place.
Wh at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a billiard-chalkholder, the combination of plunger D, adjusting-screw d, with open casing A, having flaps g g, substantially as described. y
2. In combination with a billiardchalk holder, the sand-paper receptacle b and leather backing C, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim theabove I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. y
` Witnesses:
GHAs. E. MAYs, A WM. P. HENDERSON.
