SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,003, dated November 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSIAH W. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buffing-Pads for Boot and Shoe Soles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ofreference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements on the patent granted to me on the 18th day of May, 1880, No. 227,839, for improvements in buffing-pads for boot and shoe soles; and it consists in providing the upper annular smooth piece of the pad-pocket therein shown and described with a number of radial or transverse slits or openings, by which arrangement I am enabled to turn it inside out during the process of manufacturing it, as well as being able to attach it with greater ease and security to the conic frusta of the pad-holder used for this purpose.

0n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig.2 a bottom view, of theimprovedpad-pocket. Fig. 3 represents an upper perspective view thereof, and Fig. 4 represents acentral longitudinal section of the same as secured between the frusta of thepadholder.

at is the circular bottom of the pad-pocket, which is made of emery-cloth or other suitable abrasive material, and secured by means of stitching, as usual, to the annular smooth upper piece, 6. The said annular piece 6 is provided with a central perforation, e, and in addition thereto with the radial or transverse slits or openings 0 e e e, by which arrangement the said annular piece e is, as it were, divided in independent flaps e 6', which may easily be expanded and inserted between the conic frusta a I) of the pad-holder, so as to attach the pad-covering firmly all round to the jaws of the holder.

The pad-pocket is made by laying the annular piece 6 upon the abrasive surface of the circular piece d, and uniting both of said pieces together by means of stitches all round their outer circumference, after which the pocket is turned inside out, so that the abrasive surface of the circular piece d comes on the outside, as shown in Fig. 4:. When the annular piece e was made whole, as shown in my previous patent of May 18, 1880, it was di'fficult to turn the parts after being united together; but by providing the annular piece 0 with the radial or transverse slits or openings 0 e, such turning is very easily accomplished, and the pocket adapted to be secured firmly and with ease to the pad'holder, in a manner as hereinabove set forth and described.

Having thus fully described the nature and construction of my invention, I Wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- The herein-described improved pad-pocket, consisting in the combination, with the circular abrasive piece (1, of the annular smooth piece 0, having radial or transverse slits or openings We, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
