  • Ordinary glue will not answer satisfactorily for this purpose, because its brittleness when thoroughly dry causes the skin to become separated from the wood after a number of blows have been received. Description

S. M. WILLIS.
Mallets.
Patented July 1, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
SILAS M. WILLIS, OF ATHOL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MALLETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,395, dated July 1, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom Lt may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS M. WILLIs, of Athol, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mallets and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in whichvention, I will particularly describe it.
A is the body of the mallet, and B is the handle of the same. 0 is a skin of rawhide firmly cemented to the face of the body A. Ordinary glue will not answer satisfactorily for this purpose, because its brittleness when thoroughly dry causes the skin to become separated from the wood after a number of blows have been received. I therefore apply the article known as Chinese cement mixed with a portion of fish-glue or isinglass.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is Amallet, A, with a skin of rawhide cemented to its face, substantially as set forth.
SILAS M. WILLIS. Witnesses FARWELL F. FAY, H. N. MAYHEW', AMos B. DAY.
