UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEFF D. JARRETT, OF KETOHALL, TENNESSEE.
MONUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,424, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed January 19, 1899. Serial No. 702,744. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEFF D. J ARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ketchall, in the county of Marion and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monuments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in monuments; and it pertains to a monument composed of cement, as hereinafter described, and a fastening device therefor, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
One object of my present invention is to provide a monument composed of cement, as hereinafter described, and a fastening means for securing the monument to the base.
A further object of myinvention is to provide a monument having an inner filling of cement and sand, an intermediate'layer of cement, and an external coating or layer of plaster-of-paris and mucilage or gum-arabic for furnishing a hard glazed outer surface thereto.
The accompanying drawingisavertical section of a monument embodying my invention.
A is the base, which is preferably composed of limestone, and B the monument proper.
The inner portion 0 of the monument is composed of cement and sand in about equal proportions, and while it is wet a layer of coment D alone is placed thereon, the two permitted to dry together, thus forming aunion between them.
Upon the layer D of cement is a coating or layer E of plaster-of-paris and mucilage or gum-arabic, which furnishes a hard smooth surface to the monument.
A monument as above described is cheap,
durable, and of a hard smooth external appearance.
Passing within the composition of cement and sand 0 is a rod G,which extends throughout the length of the monument and to near its upper end. The upper end of this rod is provided with a large nut or projection H, and the lower end of the rod extends beyond the lower end of the monument and of a length adapted to pass through the base A and to receive a screwing-nut I. The rod G is placed in the monument while being made and while the filling is in its plastic state, whereby it is securely held Within the monument when the plastic material has hardened.
Afastening of the above construction serves to strengthen the monument and as a means of holding it detachably to its base.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture a monument having an interior filling of cement and sand, an inclosing envelop or layer of cement for said filling, and an external envelop or layer composed of plaster-of-paris and mucilage or gum-arabic, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture a monument consisting of a central core and an external envelop or coating composed of plaster-of-paris and mucilage or gum-arabic, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEFF D. J ARRETT.
