PLANT-PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GoMPr, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State.
ed and yet one which will effectually guard.
the plant, to which it is applied, against frost and rough usage in handling.
In carrying out the above end, I provide a flexible sleeve slit throughout its length and having a number of fasteners on its meeting edges, an expansible slit skirt at the lower end of said sleeve, means whereby said skirt may be contracted, a tab on the upper end of the sleeve, and coacting fasteners carried by said tab and sleeve.
A secondary object of the inven ion is to construct the skirt in such a manner as to allow the same to be expansibly or adjustably secured to flower pots and tubs of different sizes.
A still further object of the invention is to construct the entire device in the most simple manner consistent with its proper operation.
l/Viththese objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features ofconstruction'and combination, herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings, where- 1n Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section, taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken upon the line 3-3 thereof; and Fig. 4c is a plan view of the protector removed from the plant, showing more particularly its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my invention as including an upright 1 sleeve 1 which is slit throughout its length and provided on its meetingedges with a plurality of coactingfasteners 2 and 3, said Specification of Letters ll-f'atent.
fasteners being here shown of the type usually employed for the purpose of fastening.
gloves and the like. I a
'Depending from the lower end of the sleeve '1 and formed of flexible material, is
a skirt 4 which is slitthroughout its length,

said skirt being plaited, as indicated at 5,
and being of greater diameter at its lower end .thanat its upper end, said lower end being'tu-rned upon itself and stitched to provide a guide 6 for a draw string l, the latter being adapted to have its free endstied when the meetingedges of the skirt arebrought together around a flower pot or tub, indicated at .P in'the drawings.
LVVhen the device is in position upon a plant, the fasteners 2 and 3 are secured and the draw string 7 is tied, as above suggested. It now becomes expedient to provide a simple and eflicient means for closing theupper end of the sleeve, said means being here shown in the form of a flexible tab 8 which is attached to the upper end of the sleeve and which carries a fastener 9 for coaction with a complementary fastener 10, carried by the sleeve. v I
The sleeve 1 is preferably formed of inner and outer layers 1. and 1, between which a lining of felt orother suitable inf sulating material is positioned; the three layers being preferably secured together by longitudinal rows of stitching- From the foregoing description and the accompanying illustration, the construction and manner of application of the invention will be readily understood. It may be well,
however, to set forth the manner in which my improved protector is applied to plants having the general characteristics of'ferns or palms. In thus applying the invention, the uppermost end of the sleeve 1 is fastened around the shank or trunk of the plant and gradually pulled upwardly, this upward movement drawing the leaves of the plant inwardly, after which the remaining fasteners are secured for the'purpose of retaln- I heights and various forms of material may be employed for carrying out the objects of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A plant protector of the character described, comprising a cylindrical member split longitudinally throughout its length, a plurality of cooperating fasteners relatively arranged upon the meeting edges of said member, a flexible skirt depending from the lower edge of the latter, said skirt having a tapered formation from its attached to its free end whereby when the latter is positioned upon the upper edge of a flower pot so as to circumscribe the same, said cylindrical member rising therefrom will be supported in a vertical position thereby, a draw string around the lower edge of said skirt for contracting the same, and a closer for the upper end of said cylindrical membersubstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A plant rotector of the character described comprising a cylindrical member, the
latter being split longitudinally throughout its length and including two layers of flexible material with an insulator intermediate the same, a plurality of cooperating fasteners relatively arranged upon the meeting edges of said member, a flexible skirt depending from the lower edge of the latter, said skirt having a tapered formation from its attached to its free end whereby when the latter is positioned upon the upper edge of a flower pot so as to oircumscribe the same, said cylindrical member rising therefrom will be supported in a vertical position thereby, a draw string around the lower edge of said skirt for contracting the same, and a closer for the upper end of said cylindrical member substantially as and for purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK GOMPF.
