A TTORNE V5 Encuentran ELzAinr ruit-nr, or mpenrmtn raitngfunwaaasnmf- Poomvented a new-f/ and useful Comb, of-which the following is aspecication. .This invention relates to combs of that general class employedby women 1n dressing and arranging their hair and has f or its object to provide a 'comparatively simple -this character which the comb is posittz/ely locked 'againstf and inexpensive device o accidental displaceme A further object is o pi/ovide a comb having a 'laterally movable section associated therewith and provided with upwardlycextending teeth adapte to interlock or mesh with the teeth-orftines of the comb thereby toretainthlatterin position in the hair.
A furthe'r I'object is to provide the' movable section with a laterally curved or'bowed portion which forms a housing for the teeth of the same lso that the device' will have the 2 5 appearance of an ordinary'comb;v
still further object of the 'invention is generally to improve this class of devices- 1 s o as toincrease their utility, durability and eiiiciencyas well 'as' to reduce the cost of manufacture.
Further objects and advantagesjwill appear in the following description, itlbeing understood that various changes in form, proportions andminor details 4of construc- 3'5 tion may be resorted to within thescope of the appended claims. In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a comb constructed in act0 cordance with my invention and showing the ap lication of tlie same. Fig. 2 is a front e evation of the comb detached. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the iinea-a of Fig. a. Fi 4 is aiiopplan 4'5 View showing the movab e section or auX- i'liary comb in open position. Fig. 5 isa 'similarA view showing the auxiliary comb in 'closed or operative position... Fig. 6 is a; rear elevation partly in section ofa portion of the movable section or auxiliary \\comb. f Similar numerals ofv reference indicate i corresponding parts vin `all of the figures of the drawings. t
The improved 'device comprises a main comb section or body portion 5 formed of i i speeiiieaeon/ofteaer raient. iippiicaion mea october 13,1903. serial Naasasss.

'gutta-percha, Celluloid, tortoise shell'jor-- other'suitable material 'havin an LinhereI'i-t g flexibility, said comb being o any suitable 5' size andl shape and providedA with afplu'rfality of spaced tines or teeth 6.
gral with one of the end teeth'or vtines 7 is a movable section vorV auxiliary comb 8, the latter being preferably in the formj of a Securedv to and preferably `fortified 'horizontally disposed bar which Yextends, longitudinally of the comb at llthe upper edgethereof and is curved tof conformjto as shown. The auxiliary thegeneral contour or outline of the comb or bar 81,4 is curved or bowed outwardly, as' indicated at `9 and umolded or otherwise formed' on the loweredge of. said bar are a plurality ofvspaced upwardly extending teeth 10 adapted toini when the latterfis in position in the hair."
j The free end of theauxiliar-y comb or teilock or mesh with the teethor tinespof the main comb section and thus prevent ac-k cidental/ displacement of the. main comb 8 0 bar?, 8 is normally and yieldably .supportedj in spaced relation to the adjacent end' of thef main comb section so as to-permit 4the latter to be readily positioned in `or removed` from the hairwhen desired, said section beingil lsupport-ed 'in spaced relation to the bodyportion by 'the inherent flexible properties which thev body of the comb is formed.
, One 'end f the main comb section 5 is provided with an opening in which is seated aspring socket 11 adapted to receivean enof the tortoise shell-or othenmaterialof larged head or knob 12 formed on the adja- 'cent end of the auxiliary comb section 8 thereby to lock the auxiliary section in enter has been placed 1n position in ',the hair.
4gagement-with 'themain comb after the lat- ,Attention is 'called to the fact that the or casing for the teeth 10 so that the device comb. It will also be observed that by hav-` outwardlyI the free ends of the teeth are spaced from the interior walls of the bar and are thus free to intermesh with the teeth or tinesv on the main comb section, and in position to engage the hair so as to pre.
after the` auxiliary section has been-moved to closed or operative position. In using the device the comb is inserted will haveI the appearance of an ordinary l auxiliary comb or bar 8 forms a housing ing the central portion of the bar 8 curved vent accidental displacement of the' comb" in the hair either at the front or back of the head and the auxiliary section or bar S moved to closed position and locked in engagement therewith by introducing' the head 12 into the spring socket 11. lVith the comb in this position it wllibc seen that any. upward movement of the main-comb section will cause the teeth l0 tonengage the hair and act as a stop-Ytoprevent further movement thereof. In order to remove the comb it is merely necessary to disengage the head or knob 12 from the socket ll when the spring action of the auxiliary bar lor section 12 will. automatically move the samel simple, inexpensive and eiiicient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in View. y
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A device of the class described inclnding integral main and auxiliary comb seetions, the teeth on the auxiliary comb section being 'extended upwardly and arranger/Lto mesh with the teethfon the mainwir'ibv section.
2. A device of the class described inelnding main and l.uxiliary comb sections one of which is yieldably supported on the other and provided with upwardly projecting teeth, and means for loekingesair comb sections in engagement witheach other.
3. device of the class described including a main comb having' an auxiliary comb formed integral therewith and extended,
longitmlinally of the main comb at the upper end ofnthelatter, the teeth on the auxil: iaryonb beiner extended upwardly from the lower longitudinal edge thereof, and means for lockingr said combs in engagement with each other.
4. A device of the class described including a main comb, an auxiliary comb formed integral therewith and having one end there? of normally and yieldably supported in spaced relation to the main comb, the teeth on the auxiliary comb being extended upwardly and arranged to intermesh with the teeth of the main comb, and an-enlarged head formed on the free end of the auxiliary comb and adapted to enter a corresponding socket formed in the adjacent end of the main comb.
5. A device of the class described including a main comb, an auxiliary comb formed integral therewith and having its central portion bowed outwardly and its lower longitudinal edge provided with a plurality of spaced upwardly extending teeth adapted to intermesh with the. teeth on the main comb when the auxiliary comb is moved to closed position, and means for lock-ing the main and auxiliary combs in closed position.
YIn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my'own, I have hereto. afixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
