IMPROVEMENT IN TOP PLATES OI COOKING-STOVES.

To whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES TRUESDALE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton count-y, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Top Plate of Cook-Stoves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying dlawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to the class of cook-stove tops which are composed of two pieces, in order to avoid the fracture of the plate by unequal expansion; and

Myjmprovement consists in the provision of springs to the joint or parting, which springs permit the parts, when bolted together, to readily yield to an expansion ot'the stove-body, but, on the contraction of said body, to close up and form a neat and perfect joint and one that will be free from leakage.

Figure l is a perspective view of a stove-top embodying my improvements, the removable section being detached.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the under side of the same, with the removable section in position.

A is the front, and B, the rear portion of a divided stove-top.

Extending forward on each side of the stove, from the under side of the portion B, is a hooked lug, C, between which and shoulders 1), cast on the under side of A, is interposed a spring, E.

A boss, F, depending from the front portion of the plate, occupies a slot, G, in the lug C, and is perforated heat, instead of leaving the usual open, unsightly, and

injurious joint. 7

The springs E, being wholly external to the stove, are not liable to have their temperimpaired by heat.

That portion of the top which supports the front edges of the centres and covers, I preferably make to consist of a removable section, K, which is supported somewhat loosely in a suitable rebate, a, in the top, and is held in place by tongues k, which occupy notches L in the top. This plate, being unconnected with the top, may become highly heated without subjecting the main portion to any strain or'undue heat whatever.

I claimherein as new, and of my invention- The provision in a divided stove-t0p, of the spring or yielding joint, substantially as set forth.
