Be it known that I, LAWRENCE F. Klin- NEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the stocks of selfloading rifles which employ independent clips for holding the cartridges; and its main object is to supply the stock with a chamber for storing one or morereserve clips. This object I accomplish by providing a suitable pocket in the butt of the stock and a corresponding opening in the buttplate which is closed by a spring-operated cover hinged to the butt-plate. In this way the gun itself is made the carrier of the extra magazines which may be readily taken out and substituted for an empty magazine at the breech in position for firing.

My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the butt-end of a gun-stock equipped with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end elevation viewed from the left of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the butt-plate detached and viewed from the inside. Fig. 4: is a vertical section of the butt-plate on the line w-w of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section of the same on the irregular line cc-cc of Fig. 3. And Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are transverse sections of the butt-plate and cover on the line e-2 of Fig. 3, but showing the cover plate in different positions.

In the drawings 1 designates a gun-stock, and 2 the ordinary butt-plate secured to the stock by screws 3. In the stock a recess 1 is formed of suitable dimensions for receiving one or more separate magazines or cartridge clips 5 that are adapted for use in firing the gun. The recess may be relatively deep and narrow, as indicated in the drawings. In the butt-plate an opening 6, having a little greater width and height than the pocket 5, is out, and is closed by a cover 7.

The cover plate 7 has formed on one side midway of its length a lug 8 of substantially rectangular shape and projecting inwardly from the face of the plate; and the butt-plate is provided with a slot 9 for loosely receiving the lug 8. The butt-plate is also provided with a pair of studs 10 and .Specification of Letters Patent.

11 adjacent to the slot 9, and through these studs and the cover lug S is passed a pintle 12. The cover is held securely in its open and closed positions by a stiff flat spring 13 that is secured by a screw 1 1 on a stud 15 on the butt-plate in line with the

10 and 11. The manner in which the spring serves to hold the cover in its open and closed positions is plainly shown in Figs. 6 and 8.

The edge of the cover plate 7 is beveled, as shown at 16, to cause it to fit snugly in the butt-plate slot 6; and for convenience in opening the cover the butt-plate is suitably recessed opposite the hinge, as shown at 17, so that the cover plate can be easily caught and raised by a thumb or finger.

The portion of the stock above the cartridge clip pocket a may be provided with a relatively long opening 18 for retaining a jointed cleaning-rod 19. The butt-plate has an opening 20 registering with the opening 18; and a circular cover plate 21 is provided for controlling the opening. A practically rectangular head 22 extending from the upper edge of the cover is hinged by a pintle 23 between opposite studs 2 1 on the butt-plate; and a flat spring 25 that engages the head 22 is secured on a lug 26 near tl ge top of the butt-plate, and the spring serves to hold the plate 21 in its open and closed posit-ions.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a gun stock having a cartridge clip chamber in its butt end, of a butt-plate having a corresponding opening, a cover plate therefor, a lug formed on the side and midway of the length of the cover plate and having shoulders one of which is parallel with and the other at right angles to the cover plate, a slot in the buttplate to receive such lug, a pair of studs provided on the butt-plate at opposite sides of said slot, a pintle connecting the lug to said studs, and a fiat spring arranged on the buttplate at the side of the clip chamber and adapted to press upon the cover plate lug for holding the plate in its closed and open positions, substantially as set forth.
