IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thatI, JAMES JENKrNsoN, ofthe city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and have invented -a new and useful Improvement inl Revolving Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawpart of this specification, in which` Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of a pistol with my improvement. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections ot' the same in rear of the recoil-shield, exhibiting it in two different conditions. Fig. 4 is a. horizontalsection of the cylinder and frame.'v

This invention relates to that class of rethe bores ot' the chambers are continued right through the cylinder for loading them at the breech with metallic cartridges.
It consists in so constructing a slide for closing the opening provided in the recoil-shield for the insertion ot' the cartridges into the chambers, and so applying the same in combination with the paivl by Which the rotary motion ot' the cylinderis produced,that the said slide prevents the acts of cooking the hammer or rotating the cylinder While it is open, and that the hammer, when cocked,prevents the l said slide from being opened.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.-

corresponding form, which is provided across the front of the recoil-shield E for its reception. This groove is of a depth equal to the `thickness of the side portions or cheeks, cc,of
the recoil-shield, so that it forms an opening in each cheek-piece, and is only closed at its back in the thicker central portion, d, of the recoil-shield. This slide has provided in it a slot, e, for the passage oi' the cylinder axis-pin, the said slot being long enough to allow the said slide a sucient longitudinal movement to Withdraw it from the open portion of the `slott't' on the right-hand side of the recoilshield, as shown in Fig, 3, for the purpose of permitting the loading of the chambers m in ot' the cylinder, and to return itfor the purpose of closing the said portion ot' the slot, as shown in Fig. 2. The pawl a is of such length and so arranged relatively to the slide F that its point is below the bottom of the slide, as shown in Fig. 3, while the hammer is not dra-Wn bach beyond the position of halt-cock, and hence it permits the l'ree movement of the slide when the hammer is down or at the position of half-cock. Another consequence of the pawl a is that While the slide is open and its notch f is not opposite the pawl any attempt to cock the hammer is prevented by the pointof the pawl being stopped by coming in contact With the bottom of the slid eand this also prevents the rotation ofthe cylinder from being produced. When the slide is closed the notchf, being opposite the pawl, permits the latter to pass into it and so pass through the slide into the ratchet-wheel b, and permits the rotation ot' the cylinder, as wellvas the cocking of the hammer, to .be produced, and While the-pawl is in the said notch iteiectually prethis arrangement of "rents the slide from heilig moved longitudinelly, and hence keeps it locked While the hanntation of the cylinder ise'eeted, that the cooking of the hammer and rotation ofthe cylinder are prevented while the slide is open,- and that the pawl prevents the'slide frombeing opened while the hammer is being cocked, substanti-(dly as herein specified.
