IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58.525, dated October 2, 1866.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID WILLIAMSON, of the city and county and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulIm provements in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the stock and B the barrel of the piece. A portion of the under side of the barrel is provided with a dovetail, which fits in a groove in the stock, so as to allow the barrel to have an endwisesliding motion on the stock when desirable.
The butt of the barrel is formed for receiving fixed ammunition.
a represents the stop which secures the barrel in its place when the piece is in condition for firing, and which also serves for drawing out the exploded metallic cartridge. This stop consists of a small cylindrical piece of metal, hollow from near its top to its bottom, as shown, with a small coiled spring, 0, in the hollow, for the purpose of pressing said stop up against the barrel. On a portion of the upper end of this stop is a shoulder, the metal at the back of the shoulder being beveled, as shown in the figures. This shoulder on the stop catches into a notch in the under side of the barrel. The barrel at this point, where the stop strikes it, is beveled, as seen from 0 to o, to correspond with the bevel on the stop.
G represents a small lever, which is pivoted in the frame of the stock, one end of which lever passes through an opening in the guard, and the other end passing into a small opening in the stop a. By means of this lever the stop a may be'operated when desired for freeing the barrel when it is wished to slide it forward.
E represents the trigger, which is pressed away from toward the stop by means of a small spring, (I. This trigger is provided with a small pin or projection, which is pivoted or hooked to it at its upper end, which said pin extends toward the stop a, and when the piece is at any position except at half-cock catches undera shoulder on the side of stop a. When the piece is at halfcock this pin does not catch in the stop a, and said stop can then be pressed down, so as to allow the barrel to pass back until its end touches the breech-piece. The upper end of the shoulder on the stop a serves to-catch behind the flange of the metallic case in which the ammunition is placed, and to draw said case from the barrel when said barrel is slided forward.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The detached spring-stop a, used with the lever G and the under side of the barrel B, being so constructed'and arranged as to act as a stop for the barrel and a direct retractor, substantially as specified.
2. The pin 00 upon trigger E, when used with stop a, for the purpose of locking the barrel and preventing it from being thrown up to or away from the breech except at half-cock, substantially as set forth.
