L. FRITZ RIFLE Filed Aug. 28, 192%,

maar? FTENI' @Ftli LEYJIS FRITZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RIFLE.
Applcaton'led August 28, 1922. Serial No. 584,812.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Lnwrs FRITZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rifles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to novel improvements in rifles, and has for its principal? ob ject the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efiicient in use.
Among the silent objects of the invention is the provision for storing a number of cartridge magazines within the stock of the rifle.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
'Ihe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying' drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which,
Fig. l is a fragmentary elevational view of a rifle, embodying the invention;
Fig. Q is a fragmentary sectional detail view of one of the cartridge magazine storage compartments; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, A indicates a ride and B. the stock of the same which is provided with a shoulder rest C of suitable construction. Formed in the stoclr. B are 'a plurality of adjacent pockets or coinpart ments 5 having entrance openings thereto formed in the bottom edge 6, as illustrated. The pockets 5 are each arranged and adapted to receive a cartridge magazine 7 of the usual construction, the cartridge magazine differentiating from the usual construction in so far as in the present instance I form a rib S on one of the side edges of the maga zine which is adapted to work in a groove 9 formed in the adjacent wall 10 of the pocket. The magazine 7 is held within the pocket 5 through the medium of a spring controlled pin 11 arranged in a suitable housing 12, as
shown. The outer end of the pin 1l isadapted to engage a depressed portion 13 formed in the lower end of the rib 8.
To facilitate removing the magazines from the pockets, I provide a finger lip 14 55 on each of. the magazines as shown.
.By the provision 'for storing cartridge magazines within the stock of a rifle the necessity of carrying the cartridges in a belt is dispensed with and valuable time is saved inasmuch as each magazine arranged in the pocket is filled to its capacity with undischarged cartridges. When it is desired to replace a loaded magazine for an empty magazine by grasping the finger lip 14 of any 65 one of the cartridge magazines arranged in the pockets, the same can be readily removed and arranged in its proper position as at 16.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what vI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination with a cartridge magazine having a rib and a depressed portion formed on one of the sides thereof and the stock of a riiie, of a pocket transversely formed in the stock and provided with a grooved portion for the reception of the rib, and a lock member carried by the stock for engagement with the depressed portion.
2. In combination with a. cartridge magazinc having a rib and a depressed portion formed on one of the sides thereof and the stock of a riiie. of a pocket transversely formed in the stock and provided with a grooved portion for the reception of the rib, and a spring controlled lock member for engagement with the depressed portion.
3. In combination with a plurality of cartridge magazines each having a rib formed on one side thereof and the stock of a rifle, of a plurality of transversely extending pockets formed in the stock for the reception of the magazines and each provided with a grooved portion for the reception of a rib, and sldable locking means on said stock .for engaging each yrib.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v Y
LEWIS FRITZ.
