' CARTRIDGE-MAGAZINE rocKnrr oR SELF-LOADING RIFLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 24:, 1909- Application filed December 7,1907, Serial No. 405,479. I
.Beit known that I, LAWRENCE F. KEN- 'NEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hen-- nepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 1 V Cartridge-Magazine Pockets for Self-Loading- Rifles, of; which the following is a U specification.
the butt of the stockwhich is closed by -a spring-operated cover hinged to the butt- 7 7 plate. In this way the gun itself is made the carrier of the extra magazines which may be readily taken out and substituted for an empty magazineat the breech in position for firing. 7
My improvements are illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the butt end' of the stock of a gun of the Winchester type, showing the magazine pocket 7 closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover to the pocket swung outward; Fig. 3 is a rear view of the gun-stock, that is, from the left of Fig. 1; Fig.4 is a transverse section on the line mac of Fig. 2;
Fig.15 is a view similar to'Fig. 1, but show ing a gun-stock of the type of the Savage rifle, and Fig. 6 isa rear view of the same.
'In the drawings 1 designates the gunstock, and 2 the usual hard rubber buttplate,'secured to the stock by screws 3. In
the stock a recess 4 is formed of suitable dimensions for receiving one or more separate magazines or cartridge clips 5 that are adapted for use in firing thegun. I Therecess may be relatively deep and narrow, as indicated in the drawings."
V In the butt-plate an opening 6, having a" i 7 little greater width. 'and'heightthan the pocket 5, is cut, and isclosed by a cover 7 My inventlon relates to self-loading rifles ,employing independent :magazines or car-.
closed. and open positions;
I The cover has at one end a rounded head or knuckle 8, provided with a nearly flat shoul- 10 extending transversely through the head. A flat spring 11 is placed within the pocket,
and-fastened to the'stock'by a pin 12, and
its outer end portion presses against the cover head 8. When the cover 1s down, as in Fig. 1,the spring pressure is against the shoulder 9. and serves to hold the cover to its'seat; and when the cover is lifted the pressure is against the side of the head, as shown in'Fig. 2,?and the cover is held in its open'position. For convenience in lift ing the cover its end opposite the hinge is I easily caught and raised by the finger-end.
The construction of the devices shown in Figs. 5 and 6 differs from that of'the other views only in size and shape. In. this instance the butt-plate 14 is more, concave, and
the magazines 15 are of smallersize and somewhat diflerent shape, being for a \gun ,7
of smaller caliber.
beveled, as shown at 13, so that. it can be .Having'described my invention, what I I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I The combination with a gun stock having a cartridge clip chamber in its butt end, of a buttplate having a suitable opening, a cover plate therefor, a rounded head formed on an end ofthe cover plate, and having a flat shoulder at right angles to the cover, a
pintle therefor extending through the butt plate and head and a horizontal flat spring secured to the chamber wall and extending longitudinally of the stock, and adapted to .bear against the fiat and curved portions of the head for holding the cover plate in its 7 In; testimony whereof I have signed name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 3d day of December, 1907.
