Description
No. 837,929. PATENTED DEC. 1 H. N. HAWLEY.
CARTRIDGE CLIP AND HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 28. 1906.
I Z I I Tlll IOIIII 'I'I'IB a. "XHHIGTON. Du C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY N. HAWLEY, F HAWLEYVILLE, CONNECTICUT. CARTRIDGE CLIP AND HOLDER.
Application filed July 28,1906. Serial No- 828,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY N. HAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawleyville, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Cartridge Clip and Holder, of which the following 1s a specification. This invention has for its object to rovide a simple and inex ensive clip and ho der for 10 cartrid es, the c 'p being adapted to be blanke be easily and quickly supplied with a load of cartridges for a revolver, and to quickly transfer the cartridges to the cylinder of a revolver, and the holder being likewise formed from sheet metal and adapted for attachment either singly or plurally to a belt or garment and to retain the cartridges and clip securely in place, but to permit the convenient and instant detachment of the clip with the cartridges therein, thus enabling the user in a. simple and inexpensive manner to load the chambers of a revolver simultaneously in the quickest time and with the fewest movements possible.
With this end in view I have devised the simple and novel cartridge clifp and holder which I will now describe, re erring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 shows a cross-section of a belt and an edge view of a cartridge-holder applied thereto with a clip and cartridges therein; Fig. 2, a lon itudinal section of thebelt, showin the hol er in plan with a clip and cartridges therein; Fig. 3, a sectional view of the clip with cartridges therein detached from the holder, the section-line being indicated by 3 3 in Fig. 2; 4, an elevation of the holder detached with the clip removed; Fig. 5, a detail sectional view on the line 5 5 1n Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow,
and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank for the clip before it is formed to the finished shape. 10 denotes a belt or garment to which a holder is attached; 11, the holder as a whole; 12, the ch as a whole, and 13 cartridges.
In, the awings I have illustrated a clip ada ted to hold five cartridges.
e clip comprises, essentially, a plate 14,
having outer holdin -lips 15 and inner holding-lips 16, PP tridge, as clearly ing-springs 17, which which are adapted to engage the osite sides of the head or flange of a carshown in Fig. 3, and-retainare pressed out from out and formed from sheet metal, to I the plate, being leftattached at one end, a! bear against the heads of the cartridges, ac mg to press them against the holding-lips retain them securely in place.
In loading a clip the head of each 0: tridge is placed upon the late-between t springs and is then moved orward betweei pair of outer and inner holding-lips, the cor] sponding spring being ressed. downwa s ightly to permit the hea of the cartridge pass under the lips, where it is retained by t upward pressure of the spring. Inorder to p: vent the cartridge from being passed tool forward and passing out from between t holding-1i s, stops 18 may be provided at t ends of t e hol ing-li s nearest to the fi ends of the s ring, which stop the forws movement 0 the cartridges, leaving th' enga ed by the holding-lips. These st may e formed from the metal of the plate, clearly shown in Fig. 6, which shows 1 blank as blanked out ready to be-formed shape. In this figure the ortions of blank which form the outer olding-lips, indicated by 115, the ortions which is the inner holding-lips y 116, the porti which form the springs by 117, and-the tions which form the stops by 118. T
The holder likewise is blanked out 1 formed from sheet metal. It comprise plate 19, having holes 20, which receive tridges closely and will not permit the he to pass through.
21 denotes a back turned upward at ri angles to the plate, and 22 retaining-st turned downward at right angles thereto, back and retaining-strips being showI provided with rivet-holes 23 for convenie in attachment to a belt or garment.
24 denotes a locking-spring for the 1 which is pressed out from the metal of back, being left attached at the upper 1 This spring enga es the edge of the clip tween two outer ips and is provided wi boss 25, which engages the top of late 1 the clip and renders it impossible or the to be removed from the holder until spring has been pressed backward to wl disengage it from the clip.
The operation is as follows: The clip is i with cartridges in the manner already scribed, and the cartridges are assed d ward through the holes in plate 19 o: holder,'the edge of plate 14 of the clir tween a air 0 the outer holdin -lips er ing the ace of the spring andl) oss 25 Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
n5 backward as the clip is n the cartridges are passed s in the plate of the holder. with the cartridges therein, l down to lace, the spring zen two of t e outer holdingwill pass over the to plate aereby lockin the c ip and 1'y in the hol er. To load", esses back the spring, derd cartridges from the holder, :1 es as they are held by the n ers of the cylinder of a regives the clip a sli ht turn engage it from the heads of :av' the latter in place in .e Ioa 'ng of all chambers of 5 performed simultaneously 5 asingle chamber could be described my invention, I
of the character described, r with a clip having inner .g-lips to engage the heads of E a holder having holes which idges closely and retain the s for locking the clip and carlder. l of the character described, with a clip having inner and vs to engage the heads of carings for pressing the heads ling-lips, of a holder having :eive the cartridges closely .eads, and means for locking ridges in the holder. a of the character described,
the combination with a clip having inner and outer holding-lips to engage the heads of cartrid es, springs which press the heads against the olding-lips and stops which prevent the cartridges from passing forward out of the holding-lips, of a holder having holes which receive the cartridges closely and retain the heads, and means for locking the clip and cartridges in the holder.
4. In a device of the character described,
, the combination with a clip having inner and outer holding-lips to engage the heads of cartridges,- of a holder having holes which: receive the cartridges closeland retain the heads and a spring adapt to pass between outer holding-lips of the clip and having a boss which engages the cli to lock theclip and cartridges in placein e holder 5. A clip for cartridges comprising having formed therefrom radially-p aced inner and outer holding-lips to en e the heads of cartridges, springs engaging t e eads of the cartridges to press them against the holding lips, and stops on the outer lips which. prevent the cartridges from passing forward out of the-holding-lips.
6. A holder for cartridgeclips comprising a plate having holes to receive the cartridges a plate closely and retain the heads, means for attachment to a belt and a spring having a boss adapted'to engage a clip to retain the clip in place inthe holder.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
