The loader is secured in such a manner so as to be rapidly detachable from the holder and in one motion, placed in loading position with respect to a revolver chamber.
12 Claims, 8 Drawing Figures 1 HOLDER FOR REVOLVER LOADER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The subject invention provides a means to secure ammunition loaders in an accessible position such as on ones belt to provide the wearer with the capability to quickly load and reload a revolver. In my copending application Ser. No. 374,383, filed June 28, 1973 now US. Pat. No. 3,824,729, I disclosed a revolver loader which facilitates the loading of ammunition into revolver cylinder chambers. Advantages are thus provided to sportsmen, law enforcement officers, and others in a position to benefit by the ability to quickly load revolvers without reliance on manual means whereby each piece of ammunition must be inserted individually into a cylinder chamber.
In providing the capability to quickly load a revolver, it is important that the revolver loader be readily accessible. This means it must be conveniently located on the users body and that, in addition, the ammunition loader can be easily and speedily removed from the holder.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Accordingly, it is an object of the subject invention to provide a readily accessible holder which secures an ammunition loader to the users body but which permits the quick removal of the loader from the holder.
It is another object of the subject invention to provide a holder for an ammunition loader which is contoured and designed for the comfort of the wearer and which has no protrusions to prevent the holder from being worn in concealed fashion under the wearers outer clothing.
It is still another object of the subject invention to provide a holder for an ammunition loader in which the loader is properly positioned to be gripped, withdrawn from the holder, and then used to insert the ammunition in a revolver in substantially one motion.
It is yet another object of the subject invention to provide a holder for an ammunition loader in which there are means provided which secure the loader within the holder to prevent it from jarring loose at any time.
It is one more object of the subject invention to provide a holder for an ammunition loader in which there is provided a suitable optional cover which also may be functional in assisting to secure the ammunition loader within the holder and to retain its alignment therein.
In accordance with the above objects, the subject holder has been designed to provide a means by which an ammunition loader such as that disclosed in my aforementioned US. Pat. No. 3,824,729 can be carried prior to being used to reload a revolver. The holder is provided with semi-rigid walls which can be contoured for the comfort of the user as well as for reducing substantially bulges when the holder is worn in concealed fashion under outer clothing. The holder has a bracket structure contained within its confines to which the ammunition loader is clamped. The holder may be designed to house any desired number of brackets and thus can accommodate a corresponding number of loaders, however, in normal use, only one or two brackets will be provided in each holder.
In a preferred embodiment, the holder is provided with a belt slide loop structure so that it may be carried on ones belt to be conveniently positioned with respect to a revolver if the revolver is carried in a waist holster. The holder can as well be modified to be carried or secured to a portion of the holster if desirable.
While different types of ammunition loaders may be adapted to be housed by the holder, the loader disclosed in my aforementioned US. Pat. No. 3,824,729 can be modified slightly to be readily adaptable for use with the holder. This may be done by attaching a spring plate member to the rear portion of the base plate 78 adjacent the thumb position. With such an addition, the loader may be slid onto a bracket so that the spring plate member biases against the bracket to coact with the base plate 78 and securely hold the loader in position. Teat and corresponding aperture structure may be provided as additional means for securing the loader to the bracket. An optional cover may be provided and in one embodiment, the cover serves to provide a further means of securing the ammunition loader within the holder structure. If potential vigorous activity on the part of the wearer is anticipated, it is of utmost importance that the ammunition loader be secured within the holder, and the above enumerated means provide such securement without substantially decreasing the accessibility to the ammunition loader.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing a dual type holder designed to receive two ammunition loaders;
FIG. 2 is a partial cross-sectional top view of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional side view of the holder of FIG. 1 in which there is also shown an ammunition loader similar to that disclosed in my aforementioned U.S. Pat. No. 3,824,729;
FIG. 3A shows a modified loader which may be secured by said holder;
FIG. 4 is a side view similar to FIG. 3, however, the ammunition loader is shown clamped onto the holder bracket;
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines 55 of FIG. 4;
FIG. 6 is a side view similar to FIG. 3, however, shown with a hinged cover; and
FIG. 7 is another side view in which a second embodiment of the cover is shown and one in which the cover aids in securing the ammunition loader within the holder.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION With reference to FIG. 1, the holder 10 is shown comprising side walls 13 and 15 which join with top, bottom and rear walls l6, l8 and 20 respectively to form an open sided enclosure. A rigid or semi-rigid material such as plastic will preferably be molded to form the enclosure, although vacuum forming may be used as well. It is to be understood that while plastic is preferred, any suitable engineering material may be used as, for example, metal may be press formed to the configuration desired. As can be observed from FIG. I, the walls are contoured to eliminate sharp corner areas which might cause the wearer discomfort and create noticeable bulges in outer clothing if the holder is to be worn in concealed fashion. Also, it will be observed that the top and bottom walls 16 and 18 of the holder 10 are contoured to form recesses 17 and 19 to allow access to the positions where the loaders are secured as will be described.
As best seen from FIG. 3, the holder is provided with a belt slide loop as formed by back structure 22 which extends along at least a portion of rear wall 20 from the top and bottom walls I6 and 18 respectively. While this structure 22 is optional, it is desirable that the holder has attaching means for securement to the normal wearing apparel of the user or to other accessory equipment which may be worn such as a revolver holster.
As best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3 in a preferred embodiment, dual bracket means are provided, each of which comprises a pronged receiving arm 24 and a back attachment portion 26. The back attachment member 26 is secured to the rear wall 20 of the holder by any suitable means. It is preferred that the bracket, comprising the arm 24 and back portion 26, is an integral steel member and is secured to the rear portion 20 of the holder by means of rivets, not shown. The pronged arm 24 of each of the brackets is adapted to receive an ammunition loader 28 such as is seen in FIG. 3. The ammunition loader 28 is on the order of that disclosed in my aforementioned U.S. Pat. No. 3,824,729 and comprises generally a base element 12 with a base plate 78 attached thereto and further has a camming element 14 extending from the base element 12. Ammunition 34 is spring held on the base element 12 for insertion into a revolver cylinder. The loader 28 is shown in FIG. 3 as being gripped by placing a thumb in recess 36 of the rear of the element 12 with the second and third fingers on each side of the cam member 14 on the ammunition side of the element 12. It will be appreciated that the ammunition is loaded by inserting the individual ammunition pieces 34 into the revolver chambers and with a downward thrust, the ammunition is released as the base element 12 is cammed sideways as camming member 14 engages the revolver chamber externally. This causes the ammunition to be released by base plate spring members, not shown. My aforementioned U.S. Pat. No. 3,824,729 may be referred to for a more detailed description of the loader and its operation.
As shown in FIG. 3, the loader 28 may be further equipped with a base flat spring member 38 secured to the base plate 78 by bolt or other means at a distance from the base plate 78 as determined by spacer 40.
With particular reference to FIGS. 3 and 4, it will be appreciated that the loader 28 is engaged on the bracket so that bracket arm 24 is clamped between spring member 38 and base plate 78 with spacer 40 sliding within the open area between prongs 42 and 44 as shown in FIG. 2. The tips of prongs 42 and 44 are beveled somewhat to better receive the loader 28.
In FIG. 4, the loader 28 is shown inserted within the holder and secured upon the bracket arm 24. It will be seen from FIG. 5 that the spring plate member 38 has a biasing effect on bracket arm 24 to firmly clamp the loader base plate 78 against the arm. Under normal conditions, this is enough to secure the loader 28 in place, however, as an added measure, it will be noted that the bracket arm 24 is provided with a small aperture 46 which receives a little teat 48 extending downwardly from spring member 38 as best seen in FIG. 5. It can be appreciated from FIG. 4 that to release the loader 28, a slight downward pressure by the thumb will cause the small teat 48 to disengage from aperture 46 enabling the loader 28 to be slid from the bracket arm 24 as the biasing effect of spring member 38 is overcome.
As shown in FIG. 3A, the loader may be modified by extending the base plate and bending it back on itself to form clip 79. This eliminates the need for spacer 40, and it will be appreciated that the bracket arm 24 can be a solid member without the need for the pronged structure of FIG. 2. The teat 48 and aperture 46 features may be retained in this embodiment.
It will be appreciated in my U.S. Pat. No. 3,824,729 that the grip and positioning of the fingers on loader 28, as shown in FIG. 4 is such that the loader 28 can be released from the bracket arm 24 and quickly thrust so that ammunition is discharged into the revolver chambers. The same positioning of the fingers and thumb as shown in FIG. 4 is used for loading the revolver and the ammunition is facing in a downwardly direction as is desirable for loading. A prime objective of the holder is thus met in that the loader can be rapidly disengaged from the holder and the ammunition loaded into a revolver in rapid sequence.
While the holder of FIGS. 1 and 2 is designed to accommodate two revolver loaders, one on each bracket arm 24, it may be appreciated that only one loader or a series of more than two loaders may be so housed. If only one loader is to be held, the holder 10 may be reduced in size so that instead of the two indentations 17 and 19 shown in FIG. 1, there is only one and there is one bracket centered within the holder. This can be visualized if the holder 10 in FIG. 1 were to be cut in half and reshaped accordingly.
With reference to FIG. 6, a snap-on protective cover 49 is shown which, like the holder, is preferably molded of a plastic material. The cover 49 is pivoted about securement point 51 to allow it to be lowered or raised over the opening. It is preferred that it be lowered to prevent it from interfering as the loader is withdrawn.
A modified cover is shown in FIG. 7 which is flexible and which is secured to the holder sides by an elastic strip 53 attached at snap 52 or other means. The cover 50 is secured to the enclosure top 16 by snap 55 or other means so that it may be pulled down over the front of the holder 10. The cover 50 serves an additional function to covering the ammunition loader in that, because of the elastic strip, it further secures the ammunition within the holder 10 and, therefore, may be used in place of the teat-aperture structure above disclosed or in addition thereto.
While various embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that various modifications may be made. The appended claims are therefore intended to define the true scope of the invention.
