To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOHN FQPHILLIPS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Gorgona, Canal Zone, Panama, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Automatic Alarms for Refrigerator Drip- Pans, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to alarms and more particularly to alarms for refrigerator drip pans, and has for its object to provide an alarm which may be attached to different drip pans and which will be adjustable to suit varying conditions.
Another object is to provide an alarm which, while having the above mentioned features, will yet be relatively simple and thus cheap.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described and in the materials used may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which likenumerals of reference indicate similar parts of the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drip pan having the present invention attached thereto, Fig. 2 is a topplan of the structure, Fig. 3 is a detailed section taken vertically through the casting on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the alarm mechanism removed from the pan.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a rectangular vertically extending casting 5 having a passage 6 formed therein, this passage passing transversely through the casting and thus opening through its side faces. The passage 6 also opens through the lower edge of the casting 5, as is shown at 7, and a lip 8 is formed integral with the casting at the lower portion of the passage 6, extending from the inner wall 6 of the passage, across the lower portion thereof to produce a transversely reduced lower neck portion 6 of the passage.- The casting thus includes two spaced legs 9 and 10, the lip 8 being carried by the leg 9, and these legs are connected at their upper portion by a solid bight portion 11.
The leg 10 has a transverse threaded passage 12 formed therethrough and communicating with the passage 6, the passage 12 being slanted upwardly and inwardly and receiving a screw 13, having a clamp plate 14 engaged with its inner end, the lower portion of this clamp plate extending downwardly as indicated at 14, into the reduced neck portion 6 of the opening 6, and over the end of the lip 8. The leg 9 has a transverse threaded passage 15 formed therethrough, which receives a screw 16, and this screwis located in a horizontal plane with the upper portion of the clamp 14 as shown. The casting may thus be engaged with the side of a drip pan 17, the screw 16 being operated to project a proper distance within the opening 6 to engage the inner face of the wall of the drip pan, the lip 8 also engaging the inner face of the wall of the drip pan as indicated in the drawings. The screw 13 is then operated to bring the clamping plate 14 against the outer face of the Wall of the drip pan, the lower portion 14 of the clamping plate engaging the wall of the drip pan at a point opposite to the lip 8, and the upper'portion of the clamping plate engaging the outer face of the wall of the drip pan at a point opposite the end of the screw 16.
Aspring bell 18 has a threaded stem 19 which is screwed into a threaded passage 20 formed in the outer edge face of the casting, and this bell has an operating push button 21 which is extended upwardly. A lever 22 is pivoted horizontally upon one side face of the casting 5, and has an outer end 23 located above the push button 21, so that when the inner end of the lever 22 is raised, the outer end 23 will be depressed to engage the push button and force the latter downwardly to operate the bell.
The forward end 22 of the lever 22 extends beyond the forward edge of the casting 5, and pivoted to the side face of the casting below the lever 22, there is a sectoral plate 24, this plate being pivoted against the side face of the casting at its minor end portion, as indicated at 25. The major end portion of the sectoral plate has an arcuate slot 26 and pivoted upon the plate inwardly of this slot 26 and concentric therewith, there is the inner end of a float arm 27, the pivot point thereof being indicated at 28.
A clamping member 29 has a stem 30 which is engaged through the slot 26 and through the float lever 27, and this clamping member has also a head 29 which is located against the opposite face of the sectoral plate 24; from the float lever. A wing nut 31 is engaged with the stem 30 outwardly of the lever 27, and the clamping member may thus be operated to hold the float lever at different points in its movement upon its pivot 28. A float 33 is carried by the end of the lever 27 which is directed away from the casting 5, and this float is thus disposed within the pan 17 to be raised by water accumulating within the pan.
A yoke 34 is secured to the plate 24:, this yoke having upwardly directed spaced legs 34 which are adapted to receive the inner extremity 22 of the lever 22 therebetween. It will thus be observed that, when the accumulation of Water within the pan 17 has raised the float 33 to a predetermined point, the extremity 22 of the lever 22 will be received within the yoke 3a and the lever will be operated to ring the bell 18. By reason of the provision for adjustment of the float lever 27 upon the sector 2a, the point of the Water level at which the bell will be rung may be varied to suit different conditions.
What is claimed is 1. An alarm for drip pans comprising an attaching device, a sounding device con nected with the attaching device, an adjustable pan engaging screw engaged in the attaching device, a lip carried by the attaching device below the screw, a clamping screw disposed oppositely to the adjusting screw, a clamp plate engaged with the clamping screw and extending over the adjusting screw and the lip, a lever pivoted upon the attaching device, said lever being movable to operate the sounding device, a float lever pivoted to the attaching device, means carried by the float lever for operating the first named lever, and a float carried by the float lever.
2. An alarm for drip pans comprising an attaching device, a sounding device carried by the attaching device, a lever pivoted upon the attaching device and arranged for movement to operate the sounding device, a slotted member pivoted upon the attaching device, a float lever pivoted to said member and having adjustment in the slot, a yoke carried by the member and arranged for the reception of one end of the first named lever and for operation of the said first named lever to operate the sounding device and a float carried by the float lever.
3. An alarm for drip pans comprising an attaching member, a sector shaped member pivoted at its minor portion upon the attaching member, said sector shaped member having an arcuate slot therein, a float lever extending across the arcuate slot and pivotally connected with the sect-or shaped member, the pivot point of the float lever being concentric with the arcuate slot, a clamping device engaged in the float leverand through the slot, said clamping device being operable to hold the float lever at different points in its pivotal movement, a float carried by the float lever, a yoke carried by the sector shaped member above the float lover, a bell carried by the attaching member, and a lever pivoted upon the attaching member for operation to sound the bell, said second lever extending into the path of movement of the yoke, for engagement in and movement by the yoke when the float lever is raised to ring the bell.
