(No Model.)
G. H. WRIGHT; FUNNEL.
No. 500,453, Patented June 27, 1893.
m: Mauls raven wuum-ufna. WASHINGTON, we
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. WRIGHT, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO CHAREES A. HORSLEY AND GUY M. BRYAN, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
FUNNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,453, dated June 2'7, 1893.
Application filed February 13, 1893. Serial No. 482.145. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Funnels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art IO to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in r5 funnels for conveying liquids into bottles or other receptacles having small openings, the object being to provide a novel construction whereby a valve is automatically closed when the receptacle is full or the liquid has reached the proper level, so as to cut off the supply and prevent overflow which frequently occurs in using the ordinary funnels, resulting in loss and waste. 7
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a funnel constructed in accordance with my invention,
0 the valve being shown open. Fig. 2 is asimilar view of the same, the valve being closed.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the spout of the vessel, and 2 the conical portion, which may be of any ordi- 5 nary or suitable construction. At the upper end of the spout, or where it joins the conical portion, is an annular ring 3, firmly secured to the funnel and forming a valve-seat. This ring is formed with lugs 4 in which is journaled a circular valve 5, which, when depressed, rests upon the valve-seat and closes the opening therein. Secured to said ring is an upwardly extending rod 6, to which is pivoted an arm 7, having a notch 8 in its lower edge. This arm extends across the valve-seat and the edge of the valve, when the latter is raised, engages with the notch whereby the valve is held in a raised or open position. Se-
cured tov the valve opposite the journal thereof, is an upwardly extending rod 9, which passes through a guide or eye secured to the upper edge of the funnel, and the end is bent into a finger-loop 10.
Passing through an aperture in the annular ring is a vertically movable rod 12 having its upper end formed into a loop or eye 13, with which the free end of the arm 7 engages. The lower end of rod 12 passes through a conical guide 14, secured to thelower end of the spout 1, by means of a rod 16. This rod 12, at its end is provided with a float 15, of any suitable material.
The operation is as follows: The spout l is inserted in the neck of a bottle or other receptacle, and the rod 9 pulled up to open or raise the valve 5, connected therewith. As the valve rises its edge will engage with the notch in the arm 7, whereby it will be retaiped in such raised position. WVhen the liquid in the receptacle reaches the float, the latter will rise, and by means of rod 12, will raise the arm 7, disengaging the valve from the notch, and allowing the valve to fall by gravity and close the opening in its seat, thus cutting 0E the supply to the receptacle, and preventing overflow of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination in a funnel of the valveseat and valve located at the upper end of the funnel spout, the upwardly extending rod secured to said seat, the horizontal arm pivoted to said rod and provided with a notch on its under side, the upwardly extending rod secured to the valve, and the vertically movable rod connected with the free end of said arm and provided with a float at its lower end, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. WRIGHT.
