WILLIAM E. WERD, OF ROUNDUP, MONTANA.
VALVE Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Application filed November 14, 1908. Serial No. 462,606.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WERD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roundup, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to valves. In its present embodiment, it is shown as ap-` plicable for dispensing beverages, or as a means for controlling the supply of water for irrigation purposes.-
The object of the invention is to provide an organization which is simple and durable in construction, readily controlled, and one which automatically prevents leakage.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to vbe more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany* ing drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through one embodiment of the invention employed for dispensing beverages; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation, showing the invention applied for dis ensing beverages, and also showing a modiFed attachment to the valve stem; and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation, showing the invention as applied for irrigation purposes.
Referring to Fig. 1, a liquid to be dispensed may be retained in a reservoir 1, having a suitable cover 2, and su ported in a frame 3. The reservoir 1 may lie of glass or any other suitable material. The frame 3 may be of metal, and may be mounted upon a marble slab 4, secured to the top of a counter 5. A pipe 8 may be passed through a hole 9 in the top of the counter 5 and through a similar hole in the slab 4 and into the reservoir 1. Said pipe 8 may be provided with a collar 10, adapted to engage with the under side of the frame 3. A washer 12 is threaded to the upper end of the pipe 8 and provided with suitable means for making the joint liquid-tight between the reservoir 1 and the pipe 8.
The pipe 8 may connect with a suitable pipe 14, threaded into a boss 15, formed on one side of a receptacle 16. The rece tacle 16 may be made of any desired materia suitable for the purpose. If desired, the pipe 14 could be externally threaded to the boss 15, the latter being extended and externally threaded in order to make the connection.
The receptacle 16 is substantially spher ical in form, and is provided with a screw threaded opening at its bottom, for the reception of a screw-threaded flange 20, formed on the bottom of a cylinder 21, having perforations 22 extending around its periphery. Said cylinder 21 may be screw-threaded at its upper end and provided with a threaded cap 24. The cylinder 21 is extended below the flange 20 and provided with a valve seat 26, adapted to coperate with a ball 27. The ball 27 is intended to be perfectly round, in order to closely lit the seat 26, to prevent leakage of the liquid therebetween. Below the valve seat 26 is a second valve seat 28, which may be conical to receive a conical body 30, having a ange 29 at its upper end, adapted to come in contact with the ball 27 to raise the latter from the seat 26.
Extending downwardly from the valve body 30 is a valve stem 31, provided with a plurality of ribs 32, forming channels 33,in which the liquid will run. Secured to the lower end of the valve stem 31 may be a rubber button 35, adapted to come in contact with the inside of the bottom of a glass or other receptacle 37, as shown at the left-h and side of Fig. 1. Said valve stem 31 may also be provided with a gage 38 for indicating when the proper amount of beverage has been withdrawn. The valve stem maybe formed of sections 40, 41 and 42, whereby the stem may be lengthened or shortened as desired. If desired, a second receptacle 50 may be provided and connected to the receptacle 16 by means of a pipe 51, secured within bosses 52 and 53, and passing through a sleeve 54, formed on a bracket 55, secured to the under side of the top 5 of the counter. The valve and its casing in the receptacle 50 is a duplicate of that shown in the receptacle 16.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the receptacle is connected by means of a pipe 61 to any suitable reservoir 62, and provided with a valve casing 64, having a valve therein similar to the valves 27 and 30. The lower' end of the valve stem 66 has pivoted thereto at its lower end a plurality of iingers 68 adapted to span across the top of a cup 69, or any other suitable receptacle. Vifhcn the cup is pushed upwardly, the valve stem 6G travels therewith, and operates to raise the valve within Vthe receptacle in the same manner as shown in Fig. l.
Referring to Fig. 4, the invention is shown as applied for irrigation purposes. The wae ter is retained by the dam 71, through Which a pipe 72 is passed. Said pipe 72 is provided on its one end with a strainer 73 for preventing foreign matter from passing through the pipe. The other end of the pipe 72 is connected to a suitable receptacle 75 having` a horizontal bottom 7 6 forming a support for a valve casing 77 similar to the casing 21. The valves within the casing 77 are the same as shown in Fig. l. Said casing is also perforated at 7 8. lhc lower end oi' the valve stem 8O is pivotally connected to a right-angled arm 8l. having a slot in its upper end to receive one end 82 of a hand lever S3, which is fuloruined at 84 in a bracket 8.5 mounted upon the upper end of the receptacle 75. rThe hand lever S3 may be arranged to co-act with a gage 87 secured to the upper side of the receptacle 75, and provided with holes 88 through which securing means may be passed to lock the lever 83 in any desired adjusted position. By so locking the lever 83 the valve stein 8() will be maintained at a de'l'inite position7 and a specified amount ot water, dependent upon the ilnessurc, will always be furnished troni the reservoir 70, thus obviating disputes, often arising in case ot this kind.
The uses to which this invention may be applied are so numerous that a list of them would be necessarilyT incomplete, but it wil be understood that the principles underlying' the embodiments shown are the same.
Having` thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination, a receptacle for holding liquid, a perforated tube mounted within said receptacle and having a valve seat near its loWer end, a ball coperatingl with said seat, and a plunger below said ball arranged to slide through the end ot said tube and raise said bail from its seat when niovcd upwardly, and to close the lowcr end of said tube when in its lowcrlnost position.
