To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL F. DEIN- iNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county ofKings and State of New York, have inventedI an Improvement in Alarms for Catch-Basins, of
audible alarm when the drip-pan is full ornearly so, and therefore requires emptying. This is accomplished in the present instance by the employment .of an ordinary form of spring-actuated bell and float for operating` the trip-lever thereof, in connection with a peculiar form of clip device for attaching the bell and its trip-lever to the upper edge of the pan; all as hereinafter particularly described, and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the device to a pan. Fig. 2 is a detail plan View, illustrating the manner of foi-min the clip device from sheet metal. Fig. 3 1s an enlarged side elevation of the clip, with the bell and operating-lever connected thereto. Fig. i is a side elevation, showing a slightmodification in the construction of the clip.-

In carrying out my invention I employ in the first instance a well-known form of spring-actuated bell, 5, a part, as 6, of which is provided at its outer end with a depression 7, for the purpose hereinafter explained. The trip-lever 8 of this bell is extended a suitable distance, and upon the outer end thereof is secured a float 9.
For the purpose of readily and conveniently applying this bell and its operating or trip-lever in connection with a drip-pan or receptacle receiving water or other iuid, I provide a clip device which is made up of sheet metal, preferably spring metal, in such manner as'to firmly grip the bell, pivotally support the trip-lever thereof, and detachably engage theupperedge ofthe -pany or receptacle.` In forming this clip I employ a metal strip having lateral members 10, 10, pivot- ears 11, 11, struck upwardly therefrom at one side of the aforesaid members, and a lip 12 cut from the body portion ofthe strip at the` other side of the lateral me1nbers,. the'extremity of this end of the strip beingy formed with a boss 13. The strip is bent upon itself in opposite directions to formaloop 14 and a. spring hook 15, the pivot-ears being located at the upper 'end of the combined loop and hook, while the spring members 10 and lip 12 are carried by the loop portion thereof. The loop 14; is adapt-ed to receive the bell 5 within the same, and the outer ends of the members 10 are bent to provide spring fingers which embrace the opposite sides of said bell to hold it in place; but in order to form a more secure engagement of the clip device with the bell the lip 12 is bent to yieldingly engage the lower end of the bell, while the outer spring member of the loop presses against the front of the same with the boss 13 in engagement with the depression 7. When the bell is slipped into the loop to be engaged in the manner hereinbefore described, the operating-lever of the bell is pivotally connected to the ears 11 by means of a pin 16. In this manner, as will be seen, the bell and its operating lever carrying the float are firmly connected to the 4clip device, and the parts are thereby adapted to be supported at the upper edge of the drip-pan by simply passing the spring hook over said upper edge, which will locatethe bell at the outer side of the pan and the float within the same, as shown in Fi .p1 of the drawings.
The operation of the a arm will be readily understood, for when the water in the pan reaches a certain level it will raise the float, and the latter being attached to the trip or operating lever will operate the latter to release the mechanism ofthe bell, causing an alarm to be sounded, so that any one within hearing of the alarm will know that the pan is full and should be emptied.
In Fig. 4: I have shown a slight modification of the invention, in which the support for the bell consists of a vertical member 17 having a forwardly-projecting lip 19 at its lower end and the engaging springiingers 10 at an intermediate portion of said vertical memberg this support for the bell being similar to the other hereinbefore described, with the eXception of the omission of the forwardly projecting spring member of the loop. In this modification the bell is supported by engaging the spring members or fingers l0 and the lip 19, in connection with the pivotal engagement of the operating lever with the pivot-ears 11.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. In an alarm device for the purpose sel forth, the combination with a spring-actuated Vbell and its trip-lever, the latter having a float at its Vouter end and the bell having a depression in the front of the same, of a clip device ycomprising a combined spring hook and loop, the latter being adapted to receive the bell and provided with opposite spring fingers engaging the sides of the bell and an upturned free member with Va boss at its outer end en aging in the depression in the front of t e bell, and pivot-ears at the upper end of the clip device between which the trip-lever is pivoted, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an alarm device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a spring-actu ated bell and its trip-lever, the latter having a iioat at its outer end and the bell having a depression in the front of the same, of a clip device comprising a combined spring hook and loop, the latter being adapted to receive the bell and provided with opposite Fspipg lingers engaging the sides of the bell, a lip engaging the lower end of the bell, and a forwardly-projecting spring member with a boss at its outer end engaging in the depression in the front of the bell; together with pivot-ears at the upper end of the clip device between which the trip-lever is pivoted, substantially as-shown and described.
