Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUG EN C. PAETOW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.-
REFRIGERATOR-LEAK ALARlVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,557, dated December 25, 1894.
Application filed July 19, 1894. Serial No. 518,001. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LEUGEN C. PAETOW, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at New York, in the county of New Yorkand State of NewYork, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing Overflow of Water, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide [0 an overflow alarmfordrip pans for refrigerators and the like, said device comprising an alarm which is actuated when a certain quantity of water has collected thus indicat-' ing the necessity of emptying the pan and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of the alarm.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the alarm .sec-
tioned along x m Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section along y yFig. 2.
The drip pan 1 is adapted to catch the dri ppings from a refrigerator or cooler 2. To said 2 5 pan is connected an arm 3 made suitablyattachable as bythe fork adapted to clasp an edge of the pan and secured by thumb screw '6. This arm 3 is placed on or suspended from a hook or catch 7 so that an edge of pan 1 is somewhat raised ofi the floor, part of the weight of pan 1 thus acting on hook or link 7. The book 7 is connected to a lever 8 and 9 fulcrumed at 10 and having its arm 9 pressed by spring 11 into contact with stud 12 ex- 5 tending from shaft 18 of the escapement or anchor movement 13 from which extends the hammer 14: toward the bell 15. A toothed wheel 16 actuated by a clockwork or train of wheels is adapted to actuate the escapement 4o 13. A crank key or handle 17 is'provided for winding up the clock movement.
The spring 11 while pressing lever arm 9 into contact with the escapement 13 holds the latter against actuation by wheel 16 but when the pan 1 is filled to the proper limit the weight of the pan and contents will lift lever arm 9 against pressure of spring 11 so as to free escapement l3, whereupon the wheel 16 beginsto revolve to vibrate the escapement with the hammer 14, which latter sounds the bell or alarm 15 to indicate the necessity of emptying the pan. The frame carrying the wheel toothed'wheel and an escapement or anchor movementactuated by said wheel, in combi- "nation with a lever fulcrumed between its ends and at one end normally held in engagement with the anchor movement to prevent the action of the latter, and a pan or vessel suspended from the other end of said lever,
sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereo'fI have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing wit EUGEN c. PAETO W.
