` 2 Claims. (Cl. 46-46) This invention relates to toy guns, and it is ably of sheet metal which extend across the enan object of the invention to provide a device of larged end portion 5 of the slot 4 and which this kind constructed in a manner whereby it may plates provide a mounting for the shaft 10 and be operated invimitation of a machine gun and also act to join the barrel to the stock. As herein 5 wherein the stock or body portion of the gun is disclosed. this shaft 10 is substantially coplanar 6 formed or constructed in a manner whereby the with the fac`e 6 of the slot 4 and is directed device may be employed toA advantage for the through a toothed member 11. This member 11 purpose of displaying advertisements.v is held for rotation with the shaft 10 by an angular The invention consists in the details of con nut 12 threaded uponthe shaft 10v and fitting lo struction and in the combination and arrangewithin a recess le provided in a side face of the i@ ment of the several parts of our improved toy toothed wheel 11. gun whereby certain important advantages are The teeth 15 of the wheel 11 are equidistantly attained and the device rendered simpler, less spaced therearound and are of a ratchet type expensive and otherwise more convenient and so that the shaft and wheel can only be rotated in 15 advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more one direction under the control of the spring strip l5 fully set forth. or plate 7. However, as the shaft 10 together with The novel features of our invention will herethe wheel k11 thereon vis rotated the teeth 15 will inafter be denitely claimed. engage from below the projected end portion of In order that our invention may be the better the spring strip or plate 7 to lift it away from the titi understood, we will now proceed to describe the face 6 of the slot 4 and allow said strip or plate 2o same with reference to the accompanying draw- 7 as it passes from a tooth to spring down and ing, whereint forcibly strike the surface 6 making a report Figure l is a view in side elevation of a toy in simulation of gun lire. The rapidity of these gun constructed in accordance with an embodisounds will of course depend upon the speed with ment of our .invention certain of the parts being which the shaft 1o and wheel 11 are rotated. As 25 indicated by broken lines; herein disclosed the shaft 10 is extended to one Mgure 2 is a fragmentary View in elevation of side of the stock or body S to provide an operating the device as illustrated in Figure 1 with the side handle 16. plates removed; The side faces of the stock or body member S g2@ Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially are adapted to have suitably secured thereto, as 3o on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direcat 17, the side plates 18 which may be of heavy tion of the arrows with the operating member cardboard or any other desired material and upon in elevation. which suitable advertising matter or the like As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, S deis adapted to be arranged. These plates 18 when 35 notes a stock or body member of desired length applied entirely close the slot 4 and the various 35 and of considerable width. One end portion of elements therein. It will be seen that the body of the stock or member S at its lower corner is this toy gun is simply formed of two sections or provided with an extension in imitation of a pieces of material, namely, the stock or body l shoulder butt 1 and a trigger 2 while the forward and the barrel portion 3 which rests upon the 4o end of the stock or body member S at its upper upper edge of the stock or body and closes the 4o part is provided with a section 3 in simulation of top of the slot 4 when in place. The barrel sec. a gun barrel. tion and the body section are held together by In its upper portion the stock or body member means of the plates 9 and also by means of the S is provided therealong with a relatively large plates 18 in case these are used. This permits i5 Slot 4 having one end portion downwardly exready access to the ratchet wheel 11 in case the 45 tending, as indicated at 5. The bottom wall 6 ratchet wheel should need to berenewed or for of the slot 4 has superimposed thereon a percusany other reason. At the same time the mechasion. spring strip or plate 7. One end portion nism which causes the percussive sounds is er1- of this strip or plate 7 is anchored or secured, as tirely concealed. to at 8, to the rear end portion of the wall 6 with From the foregoing description it is thought to 50 the opposite or forward end portion of the be obvious that atoy gun constructed in accordstrip 7 extending within the enlarged portion 5 ance with our invention is particularly well of the slot 4l. adapted for use by reason of the convenience and To the opposite side faces of the stock or body facility with which it may be assembled and opmember S are secured the rigid plates 9 prefererated, and it will also be obvious that our in- 55 vention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:-
l. A toy gun comprising a body having a butt, the body forward of the butt being formed with a longitudinally extending recess opening upon the upper surface of the body and extending transversely entirely through the body, the forward end of the recess being downwardly enlarged, a barrel section disposed upon the upper face of the body extending to the rear end thereof and closing the upper portion of said recess, plates holding the barrel section to the body extending entirely over and entirely closing the side openings of said recess, a spring strip mounted upon the lower wall of thc recess and having an end portion extending into said enlarged portion of the recess, and a toothed wheel within the enlarged portion of the recess having a shaft extending out through the side of the body and provided with a crank, the end portion of the strip engaging the teeth of said wheel whereby upon rotation of the wheel the strip is caused to intermittently strike the wall of the slot to which the strip is attached.
2. A toy gun Ycomprising a body having a butt, the body forward of the butt being formed with a longitudinally extending recess opening upon the upper face of the body and extending transversely of the body and opening upon the side faces thereof, the forward end of the recess being downwardly extended, a barrel section disposed on the upper edge face of the body and extending the full length thereof and closing the upper end of the recess, a spring mounted upon the lower wall of the recess and extending into said enlarged portion, opposed plates attached to the outer faces of the body and closing the enlarged portion of the recess on each side and connecting the barrel to the body, a. crank shaft extending through one of said plates, a bore formed in the opposite plate to receive the end of the crank shaft, a ratchet wheel mounted upon said crank shaft for co-action with the spring, and detachable plates disposed on each side of the body extending over the first named plates and over the rear portion of said recess.
