UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. SOHUH, OF XVAYLAND, MICHIGAN.
THERMOSTAT.
fiPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,324, dated September 29,1885.
Application filed March 11, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SoHUH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayland, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Alarms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The figure is a view in detail of my invention.
The same relates to improvements in devices for giving an automatic fire-alarm by the combination of simple mechanism with some elastic air or fluid.
In the drawing, M represents a drum, box, or flask of metal, which may be filled with spirits or any elastic fluid, N, expanding under the influence of heat, and is hermetically sealed. L is the rim or casing holding the drum M in place. Above said drum is the standard I, having the foot K resting upon said drum and held in position by the brace J attached to the box X. Fastened to said standard by the pin H in the slot G is the lever 0, which passes into the box Xand turns on the screw P. FittedinthesocketFof said standard is the spiral spring E, upon which is the slide D, operated by the thumb-screw A O, which is held in position by the brace B, secured to the box X.
By means of said thumb-screw, slide, and spring the pressure of the foot K upon the drum M may be regulated so that at any desired temperature the expansion of the contents of said drum M throws up the standard I sufficiently to disengage the point R of the lever 0 from contact with the rod S U, and thus causes alarm to be given upon the bell W by means of escapement mechanism, as shown in the drawing, or by means of an electric battery or other device.
I am aware that levers, in connection with escapements, have heretofore been made the subject of patents, and the escapement shown forms no part of my present invention.
In the drawing, the figures l, 2, 3, and4 are the different parts of the esoapement. 5 is the pin upon which the ratchet T and rod S U are hung. V is the hammer striking the bell W.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
' The combination, in a fire-alarm, of the drum M, holding the elastic fluid N, the standard I, the spiral spring E in the socket F, the slide D, and the thumb-screw A G, with the lever O, the hammer S-U V, and the bell W, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. SGHUH.
