Description

I (N0 Model.)
' J. CATZ.
ALARM, 4
Patented Jan. 21', 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB CATZ, OF COLOGNE, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
ALARM.
SIPECIFIOATION forming pa.rt of Letters Patent N0. 419,924, dated January 21, 1890.
Application fi1ed September 23, 1889a Seria1Nm 324,780. (N0 model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known 13118111,JAGOB CATZ,Of Cologne, in the Kingdom of Prussia und German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Signal Apparatuses for Indicating the Presenee 0f Explosive Gases in the Atmospheric Air, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein so the aceompanying drawings.
This invention relates t0 a very simple and 'reliable apparatus, which Will indieate by an eiectric-bell signal when a certain excess of explosive gases, particularly hydrocarbons, a1e present in c1osed localities, especially in coal-carrying ships.
This invention is illustrated in ehe accompanying dmwings, in which- Figure 1 is a secoional elevation of the apparatus; Fig. 2horizontal seetion 011 1ine x 0c, Fig. l.
The apparatus consists in a brass cylinder eomposed of two parts b and c, into which is fitted a meta1 bottom f by a clampingring e and screws o The sa.id meta1 bottom is 11013 entirely closed, but has four segmentai apertures f The lower projecting part of the brass cy1inder is adapted f01 the recepti0n of a porous-clay receptaele a. Between ehe outer edge of the bottom f and alle ring e is clamped a metal diaphragm d, consisting of very thin corrugated sheet meta1, somewhat 1ike the bellows of a concertina. The diaphragm 01 membrane d is closed ab the top sind open ab the bottorn, and is, by reason 0f its shape and the thinness of ehe meta1 of which it consists, extremely sensitive and susceptible t0 the slightest va riation s in atmospheric pressure. The upper end of the brass cylinder is closed by a wooden disk g, secured by four screws, and. carrying 011 its upper surface the termina1 screws k k and ab its center a contaot-screw z',the serewsll' at the edge serving f01 the attachment of the 100p 0r ring n for carrying the apparatus. The terminal k is eleetrically connected with ehe cylinder c and through it with the diaphragm d, the terminal k being elecorically eonnecoed With the conoaet-serew z. The termirials k k are moreover, connected with an e1ectric signaiing-bell.
The operation of the apparatus is zus fol- 10ws: When 1ight gases-for instance, hydrocarbon gases-accumulate, say, in the hold 0f a coal-steamer, they will penetrate into the apparatus set up in such localioy, passing through the porous-clay ce11 a and reach the diaphragm d. As the pressure increases, the diaphragn1 is expanded upward until the top of the diaphragm touches the contact-screw 2', closing the line and sounding the hell. T0 permit observation 0f the contacc-screw for the purposes of adjustrnent, it is advisable o0 provide two holes, facing one anoher, in the walls 0f the cylinder, which holes can be hermetically olosed by screws, es indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Upon the bottom f, fited into ehe brass cy1inder, a central boss m is provided, into which a screw-pin h is inserted, so es to a110w the height of the diaphragm 130 be adjusted.
What; I claim, sind desire t0 secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, with the cylinder, the porous vesse1, and the diaphragm within seid cylinder, 0f a screw-threaded adj usising-rod extending within said diaphragm am]. engaging the under surface of the same, a eontacting deviee located above the diaphragm, said eontacting deviee and diaphragm being e1eetrically connected with a source of electrieity and an a1arm appamtus, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereuntoset my hand in presenoe of two witnesses.
JACOB CATZ.
