VENT-CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR PUMPS.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,262, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed February 16, 1895. Serial No. 538,683. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBENEZER W. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Schoolcraft, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent- Oontrolling Devices for Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My device relates to improvements in devices for controlling the vents in pumps.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide such a vent-controlling device that can be readily attached to the pipe of an ordinary pump already in use and accomplish its purpose perfectly; second, to provide such a device easy to control and close the vent or to open the same, as desired; third, to so arrange the parts in a vent-controlling device that it can be economically constructed and will perform the functions intended without danger of breaking or getting out of repair.
Further objects will appear in the detailed description.
I accomplish these objects of my invention by the devices shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a sectional view taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2, showingapump-pipe with my improved vent controlling device attached. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a section of pipe embodying my invention, the controlling-rod F being cut off. Fig. 3 is a view of the same, partly in section, on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A represents the pipe of a pump. B B represent a collar-clamp, which is clamped around the same and contains a perforation at n, which is placed on the pipe opposite the vent-opening through the pipe. A suitable perforated packing n is placed between the collar portion B and the pipe at this point. To the front portion of the collar Bis secured a lever O, which is pivoted at r between the projecting brackets or ears D. On the under side of this lever next to the opening a is placed a packing G. The perforation passes out through a lug portion. A spring E is hooked under the edge of the portion B of the collar and coiled up over the lever D and engages it toward the lower end and tends to hold it tight against the side of the pump so as to close the packing G over the vent-opening it. The upper portion of the leverO projects upward and strikes against the pipe when the vent is opened sufficiently to serve as a stop to limit the motion of the lever. To the lower end of the lever is connected a rod F, which passes up in convenient reach of an operative, who controls the same by hooking the handle over the pins Mon the post or beam H. It will be observed that this construction will secure a vent-controlling apparatus which makes it possible, when it is desired to operate the pump, for the user to merely release the rod F and the force of the spring E closes the packing G against the vent-opening.
After the pump is used and it is desired to let the water out of the pipes for any purpose, as to prevent freezing, the rod F is drawn up and secured over the little pins '5 2', when the vent will be open and the water will be allowed to escape freely. The upwardly-projecting portion of the lever prevents its being drawn so far as to injure the spring.
I desire to say that I am aware that devices have been constructed for use upon pipes for this purpose, but that they have been impractical for various reasons. My device has been tested and found to be thoroughlysatisfactory.
The stop device prevents weakening of the spring from too much pressure, and the particular manner of connecting the spring secures the best results in compressing the pack ing over the mouth of the vent-opening, and the peculiar rounded shape of the casting around the vent makes it possible to secure a perfect joint at that point.
I desire to state that my improved ventcontrolling device can be considerably varied and not depart from, my invention. Where it is not necessary to use it as an attachment, the packing, of course, will be unnecessary and the formation around the vent-hole can be formed directly in the pipe. Other forms of spring can be devised for' accomplishing the purpose, and other styles of stops can be employed to prevent straining the spring, though the construction I have shown possesses great superiority over all others on, account of its simplicity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the pipe of a pump, A, of the collar portions, B, B, with the vent opening, a, through the same to correspond with the vent opening in the pipe; a packing, n, surrounding the vent opening, it, and between the collar and pipe; ears, D, on said collar portion, B; a lever, G, pivoted at r to the ears,D; a coiled spring, B, hooked under the edge of the collar portion, B, and coiled over the lever, C, to press the same toward the pipe; a rod connection, F, to the lower outer end of the lever, passing above to be controlled by the operative, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a pipe of a pump, A; the collar portions, B, B, with the vent opening, 12, therethrough corresponding to the vent opening in the pipe; a lever, O, pivoted to the collar portions above said vent opening, with a portion extending above the pivot; a suitable packing on said lever adapted to close said vent opening; a spring to press the lever to closet the opening; and a suitable connection to the lever so that it can be operated from above to open the vent, for the purpose spec fied- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my EBENEZER W.
