PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES G. WOODS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. BROWNE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CUT-OFF FOR HOUSE-PLUMBING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,788, dated July 14, 1903.
Application filed January 12, 1903. Serial No. 138,663. (No model.)
To all whom t mag/concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES G. WooDs, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Offs for House-Plumbing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in cut-offs for house-plumbing, and has for its object to provide means whereby the watersupply of an entire building may be cut off by a person situated upon any iloor of th building.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, Figure 1 is a vertical section representing an embodiment of myinvention in place within a building. Fig. 2 is a perspective of a section of the cut-'od rod and its attachments.
The main or trunk pipe supplying water to the building is indicated by the numeral 1. Seated within the pipe 1 and in the cellar or basement of the building I provide the cutoff valve 2, in which is mounted the dischargepipe 3. The v alve 2 is regulatedV by the lever 4, which is attached by the pivot 5 to the lug 6 on the lower end of the cut-od rod 7; The cut-off rod is provided with a coil-spring 8, the lower end of which is attached to the structure of the building by means of the pin 9, so that the cut-od rod 7 is normally held downward and in the position indicated in Fig. 1 by means of the tension of the spring 8. Upon the wall or other vstationary portion of the building on each iioorI have provided the plates 10, upon which the hand-levers 11 are pivotally mounted by means of pivots 12. The inner ends of the hand-levers 11 are provided with slots 13, thus adapting the handlevers 11 to engage with the pivots 14, which are rigidly attached to the dat bars 15, which are linked at their upper and lower' extremities into hooks on the cut-off rod 7. Thus by the depression of either of the hand-levers 11 the cut-od rod 7 will be raised, carrying with it the lever 4c, actuating the valve 2, and causing the water then standing in the trunk-pipe 1 above the level of the valve 2 to be discharged through the discharge-pipe 3. Upon each of the plates 10 the trip-bars 16 are mounted by means of the pivots 17, the bars 16 being connected at .their outer ends by means of the rod 1S, provided with handles 19 on each door. The rod 18 is normally held upward bythe coil-spring 20, which is attached to the building by means of the pin 21, so that the inner ends of the bars 16 are approximately horizontal and in contact with the lugs 22 on the plates 10.
The functions of the rod 18 and its connections are as follows: When either of the handlevers .is depressed sufficiently to operate the valve 2, the inner end of the hand-lever 1l, which is slightly hooked at the point indicated by the numeral 23, is forced upwardly and past the inner end of the bars 16 and engages therewith, and when it is desired to restore the valve 2 to its original position and restore the water-supply to the building the rod 18 is depressed by a downward pull exerted upon either of the handles 19, pulling the inner ends of the bars 16 upwardly and out of engagement with the inne]` ends of the handlevers 11, when the cut-off rod 7 will be pulled downward to its original position by the tensionof the coil-spring 8.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is-
A device of theclass named, comprising a trunk-pipe, a valve, a discharge-pipe, a lever adapted to operate the valvea vertical cutoi rod, a spring holding the vertical cut-od rod normally downward, plates mounted in the building, hand-levers pivoted to the plates and adapted to actuate the cut-off rod, and bars pivotedto the plates adapted to receive and hold in engagement the inner ends of the hand-levers, the outer ends of the bars being connected by a rod normally held upward by a spring and provided with handles whereby the rod and bars may be depressed to release the hand-levers from engagement with.
the bars, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
