WASTE-VALVE FOR WASHBOWLS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mal'. 29, 1910.
Application led May 15, 1909. Serial No. 496,135.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PRIDE, .I r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Staples, in the county of Todd and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Waste-Valves for Tashbowls, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to waste valves for wash bowls, the object in View being to provide a mechanically operated valve for controlling the waste connection from a wash bowl or the like, the said valve being operable by means of a depressible platform upon which the person stands before the bowl or basin, the depression of said platform serving to close the valve and prevent the water from passing outward through the waste pipe, and means being employed for opening the valve when the person steps off such platform.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appealas the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a vertical section, showing the general arrangement of the wash bowl, the valve controlling the waste connection thereof, the depressible platform and the connection between said platform and valve. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale, showing the waste pipe and valve mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a wash bowl which, for the purpose of carrying out the present invention, is provided at the bottom with a nipple 2 leading through the waste pipe 3.
Telescopically fitted to the nipple 2 and waste pipe 8 is a tubular valve casing et the upper end of which fits around the nipple 2 and the lower portion of which fits into the upper end of the waste pipe 3. The valve casing is provided at a suitable point with a valve support 5 on which is arranged a valve 6, the same being shown as consisting of a bowl, the latter being adapted to be moved upward into contact with the lower end of the nipple 2 to close the same and said valve being movable away from the nipple to allow the waste water to pass downward through the valve support 5 in the waste pipe, said valve support being perforated to allow the water to pass.
Embracing the valve casing 4 is a sleeve 7 having pivotally connected thereto at the point 8 a rod 9 which extends downward to and connects pivotally at 10 with one end of a lever 11. This lever is fulcrumed intermediate its ends on a-suitable bracket 01 fulcrum piece 12 and has its other end pivotally connected at 13 to a depressible platform 14 arranged in or upon the floor immediately in front of the `wash bowl 1 so that when a person steps upon the platform the lever 11 is moved so as to elevate the rvalve casing 4 and move the valve into engagement with the lower end of the nipple 2 thereby preventing the water in the bowl 1 from passing downward into the waste pipe.
Eneircling the valve casing 4 is a coil' spring 15 which bears at its' upper end against the bottom of the bowl and at its lower end on a sleeve 7 said spring exerting its tension to force the sleeve downward and thereby hold the valve G normally open. This spring also assists in returning the depressible platform to its normal position.
I claim 1. A wash bowl provided with a discharge nipple, in combination with a waste pipe arranged in line with said nipple, a valve casing having a sliding telescopical engagement with said nipple and waste pipe a valve carried by said casing and movable into and out of engagement with the nipple, and a depressible platform operatively connected with said valve casing and adapted to shift the same to move the valve to a closed position.
2. A wash bowl provided with a discharge nipple, in combination with a waste pipe arranged in line with said nipple, a valve casing having a sliding telescopic engagement with said nipple and waste pipe, a valve carried by said casing and movable into and out of engagement with the nipple, a depressible platform operatively connected with said valve casing and adapted to shift the same to move the valve to the closed position, and means for holding the valvel normally open.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. PRIDE, JR.
