FERDINAND JOHNSON, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
STOP=COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,354, dated July 18, 1882, Application filed March 221882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at T- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State-of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stop-Cocks, of which the followingisa specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of cocks or faucets which are provided with an interior elastic tube, which can be compressed by means of a pivoted lever having one end arranged to operate on the tube through an opening in the cook or faucet for the purpose of controlling the flow of liqaid.
The objects-of my invention are to provide a cook or faucet in which the tube can be compressed from the under side thereof through the medium of a yoke embracing the cock or 2 faucetand connected with a swinginglever pivoted upon the upper side ofthelatter; to provide simple means for retaining the lever in a fixed position when adjusted to compress the tube, and to provide a device for limiting or stopping the movement of the lever when properly adjusted to compress the tube. These objects I accomplish by the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side, elevation of a cook or faucet embodying my invention, showing the position of the parts when liquid is free to flow; and Fig.2, a transverse enlarged sectional view, showing the position of the parts when the tube is compressed to close the flow ofliquid.
The cock or faucet is of any approved construction, in the present instance being composed of a tubular neck, 1, and a screw-threaded shank, 2, for attaching it in position. The elastic or flexible tube 3 extends through the cook or faucet, and is exposed at a suitable point by cutting the latter away to form an opening, as shown at 4, and the edges of this cut-away portion are provided with depending lugs 5 .5. The rear end of thetube is turned around the shank of the neck 1 and bound in place by a wire or other suitable means, as at 6. The upper side of the neck lis provided with a vertical stud, 7, having :1. lug, 8, for a purpose hereinafter explained. To the stud 7 is pivoted a lever, 10, having its end bifurcated to embrace the stud and to the lever, at a suitable point between its pivotand freeend, are pivotally connected the upper ends of a yoke or stirrup, 11, which embraces the neck 1, and has its lower cross-bar, 12, provided with a curved projection, 13, which serves to compress the tube when the yoke or stirrup is raised.
In operation, whenit is desired to compress the tube to close the flow of liquid the lever 10 is raised or swung upward until its further movement is arrested bythelugS. Such movement of the lever lifts the yoke or stirrup 11 and causes its projection 13 to compress the tube. Vihen the lever is turned to a vertical position its pivot and that of the yoke or stirrup are brought into the same vertical plane,
provided with an interior elastic or flexible tube and an opening to expose a portion ofthe latter, of the pivoted lever and the depending yoke or stirrup pivotally connected with the lever, substantially as described. 2. The combination, with'the cook or faucet provided with an elastic or flexible tube, an opening exposing a portion of the same, and an upright stud, 7, having a lug, 8, of the lever pivoted to the stud and the depending yoke or stirrup embracing the cook or faucet and pivotally connected with the lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
FERDINAND JOHNSON. Witnesses:
