SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 579,171, dated March 23, 189'?. Application filed May l, 1896. Serial No. 589,843. (No model.)
To all wim/1t it may concern:
Beit known that I, LA VERNE lV. NOYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to a valve, my object being to provide an improved form of valve which may be positively opened and closed by a pivoted operating-lever, and one in which the valve hasa direct movement to and from the port in a straight line, as distinguished from a hinged valve, the valve being thus capable of being securely seated upon the port and affording a maximum area of escape for the water or other fluid for a given movement of the valve.
I have illustrated the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of the valve. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, showing the alternative position of the valve in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 2. Fig. e is a view of the movable portion of the valve.

The casting or body a carries the port upon which rests the valve h, which is preferably provided with a face b', of leather or similar yielding material. .y i
My invention in its preferred form comprises avalve-body containing the port and supporting all of the valve parts to provide a compact and self-contained structure, the valve-body being constructed to guide the valve in a straight line toward and from the port. Above the valve is pivoted the operan ing-lever, whichis provided with a short arm extending downward and engaging a bellcrank lever which is pivoted to the valvebody to one side of the line of travel of the valve, the bell-crank also engaging the valve, whereby the rocking motion of the operatinglever transmits a right-line movement to the valve through the intermediation of the pivoted bell-crank lever. In practice I make the bell-crank lever with three arms, between two of which a transverse arm on the valve rests, while the downwardly-extending short arm on the operating-lever rests between two of the arms.
The valve l) is rectangular in form and moves within an opening provided in the casting, the vertical walls of the openin g acting as guides for the valve.
The valve carries an arm b2, which moves within a slot ct/ in the casting, the slot and arm thus assisting in guiding the valve in a direct movement toward and from the port. Pivoted to the casting is a lever c, having three arms c c2 c3. The lower arm c extends through an opening in the arm h2 of the valve, the transverse portion of the valve-arm h2 thus resting between the arms c c2 of the lever c. Between the arms c2 c3 rests the arm CZ of the pivoted operating-lever d.
lVith the parts in the position shown in Fig. l the operating-lever may be raised to open the valve, the arm CZ of the operating-lever being thus brought into engagement with the arm c3 to rock the lever c and raise the valve through the agency of the arm c. All parts of the valve are moved equally from the port, and for a given movement of the valve a maximum discharge area is afforded. By rocking the operating-lever in the opposite direction the arm CZ' engages the arm c2, thus rocking the lever c and pressing the arm c2 thereof against the arm h2 of the valve to close the same. Intermeshing projections and recesses are thus provided between the operatingdever and the rocking lever and between the latter and the valve, forming intermeshing projection and recess connections. The rocking motion of the operatingflever imparts a rectilinear movement to the valve and the valve is moved positively toward and from the valveport. An arm d2 is preferably provided upon the operating-lever, which, when said lever is raised, engages the end of arm c2 to prevent further movement of the lever and remove the strain from arm c3. lVhen desired, the operatinglever may be reversed, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. l, so that the raising of the operating-lever closes the valve, while the depression thereof opens the valve. p
A float may be attached to the end of the IOO operating -lever for automatically opening and closing the valve as the water-level changes.
Having described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the valve carrying a transverse arm, of a valve-body provided with a port and constructed to guide the valve in a straight-line movementtoward and from the port, a three-armed rocking lever between two of the arms of which the transverse arm on the valve rests, and a pivoted operatinglever carrying a short arm resting between two of the arms of said rocking lever, whereby the rocking movement of the pivoted operating-lever transmits a right-line movement to the valve through the agency of the threearmed rocking lever, substantially as described.
2. The combin ation with the valve-bod y carrying the valve-port, of a valve guided by said valve-body to move in a straight line toward and from said port and carrying a transverse arm, a three-armed rocking lever pivoted to said valve-body, the transverse arm on the valve resting between two of the arms thereof to cause movement of the valve in opposite directions as the lever is rocked, and areversible operating-lever pivoted to rook about an axis in line with the path of travel of the valve, said operating-lever being provided with two arms one resting between the arms of said. rocking lever and the other arm adapted to engage the end of one of the arms of the rocking lever to limit the movement of the rocking lever, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the valve-body, of the valve 'guided within an opening in said valve-body, the arm b2 carried on said valve and moving within the slot ci provided in the valve-body, the operating-lever carrying the arm d', the rocking lever, the arms o o2 carried thereon between which the valve-arm b2 rests, and the arm c5 carried on the rocking lever between which and the arm c2 the arm d of the operating-lever rests, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a valve, of a valvebod y provided with a port adapted to be sealed by said valve and constructed to guide the valve in a straight-line movement toward and from the port, a bell-crank lever pivoted to said valve-body to one side of the line of movement of the valve and engaging said valve to raise and lower the same as the bellcrank is rocked, an operating-lever pivoted to the valve-body above the valve, and a short arm provided upon said operating-lever eX.- tending downward to engage the bell-crank to rock the same, whereby the rocking movement of the operating-lever imparts a rightline movement to the valve through the agency of the bell-crank, substantially as described.
