`further object. of m f UNITED PATENT EDWIN L. BEvINGToN, or CHICAGO.,l ILLIrmIs.,
To all 'whom 'it may concern: Y
Be itlmown that I, EDWIN L. BEvING'roN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Cuffs, of which the following is a specification.
f My invention relates to the cuffs which are applied to the ends of shirt -sleeves and contemplates the provision of yan 4auxiliary cuff which can be worn simultaneously with the attached cuff ordinarily made integral with a shirt'- lsleeve. i
The objects of my invention to provide a cmi which wiil fulyvcever the outer surfaceantta portion or the wholeof the innersurface of the ordinary attached cuff, as may be convenient at. times, for .ex ample, when the attached cuff is somewhat Worn, frayed, discolored or soiled, or when it may be desired to use a white cutf with a shirt to which colored cutis are attached. A invention is to provide a cuff which may be readily attached permanently to a wrist band, or to the shirt sleeve' when the cuif originally attached has become too worn for further use, in lieu of such wrist band or attached culf.
In carrying out. my invention I have provided a construction, one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is an illustration of the end of a shirtsleeve having an attached cuff, to which my improved auxiliary cuii' is applied tem-A porarily; v
Figure 2 illustrates a similar shirt sleeve to which my improved cuff has been .permanently attached, the cuffs originally attached having been removed; and
Figures 3 and Ll illustrate modifications of my improved form of culi'.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 1 of the drawings, it will be'noted that in carrying out my invention I provide a cut, V5, which is suliciently long to receive between the edges, 6 and 7, thereof, an ordinary attached cuff, 4, thel length of which is indicated by the lfnes, S and 9. The said cuff, 5, is also preferably of a breadth sufficientto fully cover the permanently attached cui?, the width of which is indicated by' the dotted lines, 1G and 11. v
As will be apparentrfrom an examination of the lingers, my improved form of culi", 5,

cuff any longer than necessary and to avoid;5
any disguration cuif cuff lis iroi di To facilitate the of 'the lappearance =of the f application of my r having an attaclfect cui, provide corresponding betten hotes. 15, a apted'te register' E?, ofV theattaehed cua, and in order to further facilitate the application of my cuil' to such attached cuff I cutY away the interior, surface, 14, of my improved cuff as indicated at, 17 and necessary to have the three holes lregister on each side of the cuff, which would not only be dilicult to accomplish but also would cause an inconvenient launching of the niais so inadefas to present ay surface greats: f y
as would otherwise be likely when 65 witltixe hotes, '5 9 17, so that it will vin ot'be 75 terial at the point where the cuil' button is 80 inserted. The U shaped opening constitutes what might be termed a finding aperture, as the button hole 16 in the sleeve may .by this means be readily-located and brought into alinement with the buttonhole in the outside fold of the supplemental cuff.
In Figure l I have illustrated the preferred form of my construction wherein the outer surface, 5, and the inner surface, 14,
of my improved form of cuff are stitched together 011 both sides between'the points, .18 and 19,.and 1Sa and 19a, as-indicated by the dotted lines, 20, 90a, thus forming a pocket for the reception of the attached cutf, 4, and
preventing longitudinal movement between the two cutis and insuring that they remain in fixed relative position. This I find to be the preferred form of construction for the reason that thatpartof the inner surface, 14, which lies adjacent thel be moved away from the surface, 5, suiiciently to allow a free entrance of the cuil, et, between the surface 5 and 14C, into the pocket. At 29, I have indicated a button hole whereby my calf maybe wrist bandVA and so used as arr ordinary detachable entit i A In Figure 31 have illustrated a modification in which the stitching, 20 and 24, is effected l sleeve, 21, may 10 attached toa m5 not only from the points, l18h to 19", 11
- 28 respectively.
l insures that the edges,
22 to 23. This construction provides a pocket throughout the entire width of the cuti by virtue'of the stitching indicated at 20b and 24, and hence 12a and 13, shall be entirely parallel at all times. y
In Figure 4 I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention wherein the edges, 12) and 13, are not stitched together atany point. This construction presents the advantage that it may be attached with the greatest facility in application.
Referring again to Figure 2 it will be but also from the points,
noted-thatthe cuifs of Figures, 1, 3 and 4,
may be readily attached to a wrist band or sleeve end 21 of a edges, 25 and 26, together asindicated at 27, after such wrist band or the edge of the shirt, 21, has been inserted between the surfaces, 5 and 14. In order to give the attached cuff a more finished appearance and facilitate laundering, the edges, 12 and 13, may be stitched together as indicated at, 20, 24 and It will be evident that while I have illustrated and described my improved cuit' in the form of a link cud it is equally useful as a round cuff'of the form sometimes used.
Having l illustrated its use, what I claim as new and shirt by stitching thel thus described my invention and pose the 'button :desire to secure by Letters Patent is the fol- 1. In combination, a sup leniental -cui comprising inner and outer olds, the outer fold being provided with a button hole adjacent ea'ch edge and the inner fold opposite each button hole being provided with a inding aperture` the material of the inner fold out away-"to form Such aperture being of sufficient extent to readily expose' the buttonhole in the sleeve beneath and a portion of the material surrounding such buttonhole.
In combination, a supplemental cuii comprising inner and outer folds, the outer fold being` provided with a button hole adliacent each edge and the inner fold opposite each button hole being provided with aU shaped nding slot of suiiicient size to exhole in the sleeve beneath and a. portion of the material surrounding such button hole and extending to the ledge of the cuil'. i l
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
