Application filed August 13, 1996,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WYLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of "Wayne, State of Michigen, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metal Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.v
My invention issdesigned to provide a novel folding metal bedstead of superior construction endutility whereby the head and foot portions of the bedstead may be fivlded inward over the mattress and bed clothing upon the beds ring, and secured in folded position to hold the inattressand bed clothing in place, and whereby the head end foot ortions with the spring frame and bed spring, together with the mattress and the bed clothing (the head and foot portions having been folded thereovefl, may be folded upward into vertical position.
My invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed and illusrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a View in perspective, the bedstead being unfolded or in position for use. Fig. 2 is a View in section on the line 2-2, Fig. l, the head and foot portions being unfolded. Fig. 3 is a view also on the line 2-2, Fig. 1, but showing the head and foot portions in folded position. Fig. i is apartial front view showing the head portion folded downward in posit-ion to hold the bed in place, and also indicating the bed folded up in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the construction and arrangement of the folding legs, the dotted lines showing the )osition the leg occupies with relation to tie adjacent bracket. Fig, 6 is an enlarged view showing one of'thc trunnions upon which the spring frame swings into vertical osition. Fig. 7 is a detail View of one of t e joints showing how certain portions are put together.
In the accompanying drawings, head and foot portions are indicabedat a and 6. Front and rear side bars are indicated at c and d, head and foot cross bars are indicated at e and f,- the rails e, d' and cross bars e and f constituting the spring frame supporting any suitable bed spring indicated at g. The head portion (1 comprises front endv other parts of Patented oer. so, ieoo.

rear uprights h, h, an the foot portion front and rear uprights indicated at i, z'. Toward the side of the bedstead are shown upwardly projecting standards or posts j, is, and the posts 5}, in being at the head, and the posts Z, m at the foot. The .posts j, is, and Z, m'ma support at the upper ends thereof, a mante n held in place upon the upper ends thereof in any suitable manner as by nuts p, 39 and g, 9 having a, threaded engagement upon the upper ends of the corresponding posts or standards above the mantel. I. do not limit myself, however, to the employment of the mantel, as it may or niay'not be employed Within the scope of my invention. A stetiona mantel might be provided on the Wall of the room, for example, if desired. gupported upon the upper ends of said standards or posts is a curtain rod 9* upon which curtains a, 8 may be engaged to hide the bedstead when folded in upright position. The posts j, is and Z, m are spaced a sufiicientdistence apart laterally and longitudinally to-permit the bedstead being folded into upright position, therebetvveen. The said standards may also be braced or held in position by means ofcross bars indicated at t. Upon the head and foot cross bars 6, f are secured brackets it upon which the uprights h, I). are pivoted as indicated at 1) so that the head and foot yortions a, b may be folded down and inward, the upright arms of the brackets it being pivoted at a sufficient height to permit the head and foot portions being folded over the mattress and bedding to hold them in place upon the springs. The brackets u on the front side of the bedstead are shown constructed with. are shaped slots indicated at 'w to receive binding screws on gaged in flattened portions of the corresponding uprights and nuts thereupon to hold the bead. and foot portions in desired position. The front and rear rails 0 and d are supported upon the transverse cross bars by moons of brackets g.
To permit the folding of the spring frame and other portions tical position and under the mantel, if a mantel is employed, the cross bars e, f are provided with supporting brackets 2 provided with trunnions' 12. Connected with the standards j and l, as by suitablefittings indicated the nurse each end of whicisis of the bedstead into ver- 'al 8,315 areili) upon a bracket-2.0 provided- 11 structed with elongated slots ancl'lfi, the
eorrespontiing leg being provitlecl with a pin 17 engaged in the Wells of-the corresponding 1 hracket.- T he brackets M are oreferahlv of channeled metal, the slots 15- ond 16 being formed in the Walls of the casting. The slots 16 open at the lower edge oi. the easting permitting the corresponding leg to swing into folded position, the upper end of the leg oontsoting with the lower edge of the slot 15 indicated at 18, to limit the swing of theleg. The brackets e are shown provided with stops indicated st 19 to contziet with an arm of the adjacent costing 10 to limit the vertical folding movement eh ready cleseriherli The stendortis or osts j, 70 anti 3, m are preferably connected toward "their lower ends as shown at 20 and 21 anii provirieti with essters ZI-t will be seen that my iniproyeri bedstead comprises certain fixed portions the fixed staifi' zlards ogposts at the rear thereof; heymg-meo nblnation therewith a Spflng frame 21mlhaml" and foot portions arranged to told .fis
automatically inward so'icl portions folding with the: spring mefinto upright position between saiclfixe posts,' and are Weighted at one side of the vertical eenter so that the leg, when the sprin frame is noi'tohie will drop hy .g rsvity into place. The folding legs are shown Weighted at one the'vei tic'al center by means of e curved, on
" wardly entendin'g portion 26, the construe;
tion being sneh that the Weight will auto-- inatieelly throw the leg forward and proventthe legfzom making a miss in dropping into lane. 1
The fok ng or drop, legs 13 are prefershly eeoh provided with s solicl rubber foot indicated at 23.
While the curtain rod r may he secured in place in any suitablemanner as already olescribed, I find it desirable and eliieient to provide the uprights 7c ami m with eastings 24, each provided with a socket 253, the ends of the curtain rod being turned down and engaged :in the corresponding sockets, I
l preferthat the rail 9 should haves. clove-- I tailed engagement with the pipe fittings 8,
as shown, so that the spring frame with the folding head and foot portions maybe reesenses ily removeti from the supporting stoniiertls j 7.1 and Z, m, and their connecting cross rail (2. This Willi ohvioiisly greatly facilitate taking down the nod frame, as it may be handled in sections for storsgennd shipping and moving. The spring frame, with its fohling head and foot portions may, thus, for example, be readily folded for moving up and down narrow Stairways. By providing the supports y} Z: and Z, m. with casters.
the entire bed ma-yresdily be moved about into position as desired.
It will he observed that owing to the cross bars a, f being trunnioneti upon the rail 9 intermediate .the extremities of the cross hers, a corresponding proportion of the weight of the spring frame and related foltling parts is at the rear of the trunnions thereby materially relieving the operator from handling the o i ire weight of the feltiing; heel i'rmne in folding it into upright nosilion, inosnioeh as the proportion oi? the weight thereof at therein oi the trnnnions will, of course to 2. corresponding counterbalance the weight of the frame to be lifted; in folding the bedstead into up right position.
No additional means are required to hold the mattress and. bed clothing in place than simply the folding inward of the head and foot portions, as shove specified.
'iThe siniplieity oi the eonstmetion oi my improved is evident.
lifl hoitl claim as my invention is:
l. A metal bedstead, comprising fixed posts at the rear side of thebedstend, hestl and foot cross bars PIO'VldBCl with upwardly extended brackets at the extremities thereof, head and foot portions jointeclly connected with. saicl brackets, whereby said portions may fold inwerdiy sncl olownwardlynponthe bedding, means to clamp the head, and foot. portions in desired position e front rail connecting the front extremities of saiti cross hare a rear ii; rail connecting said posts cross hers trnnnionetl upon said fined rail and removahle therefrom.
2. A metal hedsteecl comprising fixed posts Let the rear side of the hedstead, it fixed rail connecting sairl posts, hea'ci as foot. cross oars provitlecl with upwardly extended brookets at the extremities thereof and. trunnionecl upon said fixed mill and removable therefrom, n front rsil'oonneeting said eross bnrs, heed and foot portions jointedly connected with said brackets above said cross oars whereby said portionS, may fold inwardly and downwarclly nponi'the bedding, means to hold. the head incl-foot portions in desired osition and. folding legs connected with the rent entis of said cross bars whereby said cross bars, together with said head and foot portions and connecting frhnt rail may told renrwerdly, into upright position.
l 3. A metal bedsteadcomprising head. ami
foot cross oars provided with npwairdiy ex: tended brackets at, the extremit es ti iereof, folding head and foot ortions iointe'diy connected with said brec ets to fdld inwardly 4.
