COT-BED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 253,552, dated February 14, 1882. Application filed December31,1881. (No model.)-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC S. PEAR, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cot-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide the folding legs of a cot-bed with automatic braces which shall be caused to adjust themselves into contact with the legs when they are unfolded through the movement of the said legs, and are closed or folded by a similar movement of the legs into a folded position; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a bar or rod having one end pivoted to the leg near its upper end, which is pivoted to the inner face of the side rail, the opposite end of said bar or rod being pivoted to the brace near its upperend, which is also pivoted to the inner face of the side rail and outward or nearer the end of the side rail, and is of such length as to contact with the said leg when itis brought outward or past a point at right angles to the side rail,so as to stand on an incline, and thus brace the rectangular bed-frame lon gitudinally. By this'means the legs may be pivoted to the side rails of said frame nearer the central port-ion, so as to strengthen the same near the point or portion where the greatest weight rests or the greatest strain comes when the bed is in use for recumbent purposes.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cot-bed frame constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the inner face of one side rail with the legs and braces folded.
A A represent the side rails, connected near each end by the end rails, B B, to which a canvas or sacking bottom may be secured with nails or in any suitable manner, thus forming a rigid rectangular or oblong flexible cot-bed bottom, which is provided with a canvas or other flexible head-rest nailed or secured to the two opposite head-bars G, to which the bent supports D are pivoted centrally, their lower ends being bent or inclined so as to rest upon the cross bar orrod E, connecting with the side rails, A A, and to the inner faces of which the said supports D are pivoted at their lower ends by being bent at right angles and inserted in suitable holes formed therein, fso as to support the head-rest in position for use, as indicated in Fig. 1, and to fold down upon the bed frame or bottom when designed for transportation, as indicated in Fig. 2, in which it will be seen that the bend or offset near the lower end of the said supports D not only permits the same to fold down upon or over the end rail, B, in this position, but forms a seat or support upon the cross bar or rod E when in position shown in Fig. 1.
An extra end rail, B is provided at the head end of the frame to further strengthen the same, but, if desired, may be omitted, as the sacking bottom is intended to be secured to the inner end rail, B. Y The rectangular bed-frame thus constructed is supported, when in position for use, by the outward incline head and foot legs F F which are rigidly connected together in pairs by the horizontal rods or bars H, and pivoted at their upper ends to the inner faces of the said side rails, A A, so as to permit of being folded inwardly in line with and between the said rails, as shown in Fig. 2, and adapted to unfold downwardly and outwardly past their pivotal central point of connection with said rails, so as to rest and be stopped at an incline therewith by the contact of the ends of the automatic braces L L, pivoted at their upper ends to the inner faces of the said side rails, A A and connected with the said incline legs F F near their upper ends by the rods or bars P P, which are pivoted at one end to the said legs F F and at their opposite ends with the said braces L L, which are connected together in pairs by the horizontal rods or bars N, whereby the said braces L L are caused to move antomatically by the movementimparted from the movement of the said legs through the said pivoted connecting rods or bars P P, which may have their ends bent at right angles, so as to be received into suitable holes formed through or into the inner faces of the said legs and braces, and thus form their pivotal connections therewith; or their endsinay be provided with suitable holes and pivoted to the legs and braces by means of screws, nails, or rivets inserted through said holes and engaging with the legs and braces, or in any other suitable manner to serve the purposes contemplated by the construction of the several modes and devices described.
Thus itwill be seen that the above-described devices form a very cheap, simple, convenient, and durable automatic brace-support and stop for the pivoted legs of a cot-bed frame, Whereby the opening and folding of the same are facili tated.
Having thus described the same, what I claim as my invention is l. The combination, with the side rails of a cot-bed having pivoted inclinelegsand braces, of a connecting rod or bar pivoted to said legs and braces near their upper ends, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the side rails of a cot-bed, of the head-rest supports, pivoted at their lower ends to the inner faces of the said rails and pivoted at their upper ends to the head-bars sustaining the flexible head-rest, all being constructed and arranged for operation substantially in the manner shown and described, as and for the purposes set forth.
