Description

Shifling Buggy-Tops.
Patented Aug. .17,1869.

Letters Paftent No. 93,759, dated Aagast 17, 1869.
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR SI-III'TING- BUGG-Y-TOPS.
The Schedule reierred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it-magjmoncernr Be it known. that I,- \V. B. SLUTTER, of Warsaw, in the county of Kosciusko, and VState of Indiana, have inrented certain new and useful Ilnproveuients in a Device for Shifting Buggy-Tops; and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the acconipanying drawings, making part of this speeification, in which Fig-are 1 is a side view' of the bnggy-top.
Figure 2, a view of the back side.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the' different views presented.
This invention relates to a devieefor securing a calash or top to the baggy-Seat, so that said top can be put on or taken off as may be desired, thereby eonverting the carriage into an open or covered one at will.
In the drawing- A, 1ig.l, represents a hnggy-seat, of which B is-the mil, running around the upper edges of the sides and back of the same.
(l is the calash, and is secured to the seat by means of the claws I), fig.. 2, proeeeding ii'om the rail E of the calash, and clasped around the rail B of the seat, thereby securing the back of the top to the backof the seat.
' The front of the calash is seeured to vthe front of the seat by means of the spring-lever F, pivoted, at the point a, to the side rail G of the calash.
It-will be obserred that the short arni of the lever is curved into a hook, b, whereas the long arm is straight, and terminates with a hook, c. A lever of this character is arranged at each side of the Seat, andr opera-ted for secnring the front of the top to the Seat, as follows:
Fig. 1 represents the calash as attached to the seat at the back, by, means of the elaw-hoo'ks above de- 'scribed, and at the front by the hook-end of the lever, which is canght under the lug or rest e,-projecting from the inner' side of the rail B of the Seat, and which c of the long arm being sprun g under the raii G, alongsideof which it lies, as shown in the drawing.
Lu order to detaeh the top from the seat, the hook c of the lever is released from the rail G, which is then thrown upward, .as indicated by the dotted lines d, thereby disengaging the hook b from .the lug or rest e. The calash can now be taken off by simply raising the front and tilt-ing' it back, until the claw-hooks can be disengaged from the rail, which will allow of its being removed from the seat.
By this simple device, which requires bnt little skill to manipulate, a covered buggy is easily and quickly converted into an open one, and an open one, or one from which the calash has been reinoved, b'e as quickly converted into avtop or close one.
What I claim as my ilnprorement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the rails G B, Ing or rest e, spring-lever F, and claw-hooks 1), arranged to operate in relation to each other, for the purpose of attaching the calash to the seat A, substantially in the manner as herein described. v i VV. B. SLUTTER.
