SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,115, dated December 31, 1895. Application filed April 25, 1895. fierial No. 547,097. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES FRYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans for Baby-Carriages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

' My invention relates to a device applicable to baby-carriages and other like vehicles; and it consists, essentially, in providing the sunshade of a baby-carriage with a fan which may be operated from the wheels of the carriage while the latter is in motion.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the side elevation of my device as applied to a baby-carriage. Fig. 2 is a detached plan View of a cam and cam-lever, a part of the framework, and wheel of the babycarriage, as more fully described hereinafter. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the portion shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the fan.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

A is the body portion of the baby-carriage.

B and B are the wheels.

0 is a sun-shade D, a supporting-bar carried by brackets d and on the back of the body of the carriage and to the sun-shade C by the bracket 0. The fan E is hinged to the bracket 0 by a casting G which has a projecting arm 0 engaging a cord 0 The supporting-bar D is made of steel tubing and is provided with a roller C over which the cord 0 passes. The latter passes through the opening in said bar and is connected to one end of the spring-lever F, said lever carrying roller f, which engages a camwheel B on the wheel B of the vehicle. As the wheel 13 rotates, the cam 13 is brought into engagement with the roller f, thereby imparting an oscillating motion to the springlever F, which, through the medium of the cord (1 imparts a forward motion to the fan E, the latter being acted upon in the opposite direction by a spring 6, which is secured to one side of the fan and to the bracket 0.

When it is desired to throw the device out of action the pin f, which is carried by the short arm of the lever F, may be removed from one of the openings in the plate G, which is secured to the framework of the carriage and inserted in the opening f in said plate, in which case the roller f will be disengaged from the action of the cam B, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

I do not limit myself to the construction shown in the drawings described in the specification, as the same may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination in a fan attachment for baby carriages of the sun shade, O, having a hollow supporting rod, D, secured to the body of the carriage, a fan, E, carried by a bracket, 0 a projecting arm, 0 secured to the supporting rod, D, and adapted to carry and guide the cord, G a lever,-F, a cam, B mounted upon the hub of the wheel, B, and adapted to operate the lever, F, cord, 0 and fan, E, when the wheel, 13, is rotated, substantially as specified.

2. The combination in a fan attachment for baby carriages of a sun shade mounted upon a hollow supporting rod secured to the body of the carriage, a fan supported within said sun shade, a cord attached to said fan and passing through the opening in the supporting rod, a lever for engaging said cord, and a cam mounted upon and carried by one of the wheels of the carriage for operating said lever, substantially as specified.
