SASH-BALANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 19, 1909.
Application led September 30, 1907. Serial No. 395,241.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERNEST VANDERSTEGEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Cane End, Caversham, near Reading, England, mechanical engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Sash-Balances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window sashlines and the like which have a spring inserted between the counterweight and one end of the sashline so that sudden jerks or shocks cannot occur and the life of the line will be prolonged.
The object of this invention is to prevent the counterweight from becoming altogether detached and falling in the event vot' the spring in any way becoming inoperative.
The accompanying drawing shows one arrangement by which the above object is at` tained.
The usual sashline a, is connected at one end Z), to the sash, and its other end is connected to a hook (Z, the shank of which passes downward into a recess e, in the counterweight f, and ends in a crosspiece g. A coiled spring is interposed between the crosspiece and the upper end of the slot e, so that should the spring for any reason become inoperative, the weight would still be supported by the crosspiece.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination a window sash, a flexible connection having` one end attached thereto, a headed pin on the other end of said connection, a counterweight having a slot in its upper end into which the headed pin projects, and a coil spring in said slot between the head of the pin and the upper side of the slot.
In testimony whereof, I afiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST VANDERSTEGEN.
