No. 440,129. Patented Nov. 11, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESTER YV. BOWEN, OF SAVANNA, ILLINOIS.
SASH-CORD FASTEN ER.
,Y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,129, dated November 11, 1890,
Application filed April 26, 1890. Serial No. 349,682. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER IV. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savanna, in the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sash- Oord Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sash-cord fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the means for attaching the end of a sash-cord to a sash and enable the cord to be readily secured in place and removed therefrom when desired.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is alongitudinal sectional View of one side of a sash and casing, illustrating the manner of securing the sash-cord to the sash and sash-weight. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the sash-cord fastener or lever.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a sash` which is provided with a cylindrical recess 2, in which is secured,by a fastener or lever 3, one end 4. of a sash-cord 5, and the other end 6 ot' the sash-cord 5 is secured to a weight 7, sliding in the usual manner in a window frame or casing 8, and the said sash is provided with the usual longitudinal groove 9, which communicates with the cylindrical recess 2, and is adapted to receive a portion of the sash-cord 5 lying between the sash and the frame or casing.
The fastener or lever 3 is provided with a pointed or arrow-shaped head 10, and the shank l1 forms a continuation of one side of the head 10, and is provided with a longitudidal groove 12 to receive the cord and prevent it slipping from the lever, and the other side of the head 10 is extended at the edge 13 to provide a recess 14, by which the lever is fulcrumed in the cylindrical recess 2. A. rod 15 passes across the recess 2 of the sash and is arranged to be engaged by the recess 14. of the head 10 of the fastener or lever 3, and the said lever or fastener is adapted to be turned upon the pivot or fulcrum 15 to bring its point in engagement with the sash-cord and press the latter against the side or wall of the cylindrical recess 2 of the sash.
In securing the sash-cord to the sash its end is placed in the cylindrical recess 2, opposite the fastener or lever, and the latter is turned on its pivot and brought into alignment with the side of the sash, which operation forces the point of the lever against the end of the sash-cord and holds the latter firmly against the wall of the recess, and it will readily be seen that the greater the pull upon the sash-cord the more securely the latter will be held, as such a strain tends to bring the shank of the lever parallel with the side of the frame and force the head l0 into closer engagement with the saslrcord.
It will readily be seen that the manner of fastening the end of the sash-cord to the lever is simple and inexpensive and adapted to enable the end of the sash-cord to be readily released when desired.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction of the lever, as minor changes in the form and proportion of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Vhat I claim is- 1. In a sash-cord fastener, the combination of the sash provided with the pivot-fulcrum 15, and the lever 3, having the pointed head adapted to engage the sash-cord and provided with the recess 14., to receive the pivot or fulcrum, and having the longitudinal groove 12, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a sash-cord fastener, the lever 3, fulcrumed in a recess of the sash and having its head arranged therein and adapted to force the cord in the recess and hold it therein, the body of the lever being arranged along the outer edge of the sash to be engaged by the cord, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LESTER lV. BOWEN.
