PAPER 4BOTTLE arm orner. CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters IIlatent.
Application filed December 30, 190,8. Serial No. 470,023.
To all 'whom 'it lnwfy concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. BREWING- 'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improve# ments in PaperBottles and other Contain- V ers, of which the following is a specification.
vMy invention relates to' an improvement in papenJoottles, cups or other containers made substantially of paper or equivalent material, the object being to provide receptacles of lthis character which can be cheaply manufactured, and which will with- Y stand the rough usage` to which such articles are usually subjected.
My invention is particularly designed totake the place ofarticles heretofore made of cation, Figure 1 is a view of a container constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional planview onthe line A-B of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale, illustrating the manner of rolling the joint; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the Vinterlocking ends of the metal vstrip or band; and Fig. 5 is a sectional View of a modified form of a cover.`
Referring in ithe first instance to Figs. 1
and 2, A indicates a tubular body portion,
which is made from paper or some equivalent material, an'd` given the proper taper, or if preferred, it 'may be made in the form of a cylindrical tube of even diameter throughout. The edges of the body portion are secured together byv irst bending, them back upon the body part'as indicated at 1,
vand by inserting and locking the said bent portion 1 in the recessed edges of the locking strip 2, which consists of a stri of sheet metal bent inwardly lengthwise a ong both edges, so as to form grooves or recesses 3, 'in which the' edges 1 of the body part A are inserted and locked, by compressing the sides of the grooves or recesses upon the inclosed ends. It is also understood that the said body part may be made from a cylindrical seamless tube which may be tapered or I otherwise, as may be desired, but owing to the device may be manufactured, Aas compared-with thel cost in the manufacture -of seamless tubing, I have shown this as the form I prefer to use in the construction of my invention. B indicates a bottom, and is made of material similar to that of the body part, (butof heavier material if. desired)- The bottom B is primarily formed with a downwardly projecting extremity or flange 4, the bottom being set up within the lower endV portion. 5 of the body part a distance equal to the depth ofthe extremity 4. C is a metal band secured around the lower end portion 5, by means of the interlocking joint- 6, the lower edge 7 of the band projecting beyond the flange 4 and the lower bottom portion 5. When the bottom has been thus located within the lower end portion 5, and
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.'
'the cheapness in cost at which thisv part of the band C secured around the said bottom body part 5, and inward under thebottom, I A
am enabled to secure superior strength, tightness and compactness of joint. By making the edge 7 of the band C extend below the extremity of the flange 4, and body part 5, I am enabled to roll the edge 7 over and above" the ange and body part, yand hold the flange and body part firmly and securely together, making a water tight joint.. 'The bending downward of the lower portion c of said band C is important, as it effectually seals or locks the curl of the paper against uncurling.
One of the features which distinguishes By rolling the por? my invention from devices of an analogous t Removably secured on the upper end of liang forming a tight and compact joint.
The lower edge of the band forms a depend- `ing liange 10, by means of which the cover is secured on the container.
The lower edge 'of the depending ilangeisrolled outwardly over on. itself to form a bead 1l, thereby se curing va, special stiffness to` the cover, also affording a means by which the removal of the cover is facilitated.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modified form of a cover. In this instance, I have provided a cover 19 havin a depending flange 20,! and having the ban C secured on the inner side of the liange. The lower ed e 2l of the vband C andthe ange 20 are ro ed over and outward -together on a curve to Aform a'bead 22. This construction practically accomplishes the purposes set'forth in the descrip- -tion of the preferred form of cover.` 'V
Slight changes and alterations might be v resorted to as .to the form and arrangement of the several parts described without dev .parting from -the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I do not wish to limit myself Eo the exact construction as herein set forth;
ut A .l 'y l I-laving fully described my invention,
. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A container, comprising a tubular paper body-portion, a paper bottom rprovided with a' depending ange, inserted Within the lower part of said body-portion, and a metal band exteriorly encircling the body-portion and projecting below the lower extremity thereof, said projecting part lof the band, as wall assaid flange and said lower extremity of the said body-portion, being rolled on a curve under said bottom and inward and interiorlyrelative tothe tubular body-portion, a portion of said inward-rolled portion of the band being bent downward substantially parallel 'with the'interior surface of said body-portion, whereby the curl of the paper, so formed, is sealed andlocked against uncurliug. Y
2. A container comprising atubular, aper body-portion, a paper-cover provi ed with a'iiange, a'inetal band encircling said body-portion, one extremity of said metal band being simultaneously rolled with the said cover-flange, on a curve, whereby the rolling of the band maintains the curl .of the paper against uncurling, and means carried .by said band for facilitating removal of the cover. A Y
3. A container' comprising a `tjubula'r, aper body-portion, a paper-cover v'provi ed with a ange, a'metal band encircling said body-portion, one extremity of said metal band being simultaneously rolled with the said cover-Bange,Y on'a curve, whereby the rolling of the band maintains the curl of the paper against uncurling; said band being provided with a rolled extremity for facilitating removal of the cover.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
