PAPER CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909;
Application filed March 5, 1909. Serial No. 481,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S.- BREWING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of-Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates'to an improvement in paper bottles, cups and other containers made substantially of paper or equivalent material,
the object being to provide a receptacle of this character which can be cheaply manufactured, and which will withstand the rough usage to which such articles are usually subjected.
My invention is particularly designed to take the place of articles heretofore made of glass or tin and is to be used as a temporary container.
lVith the foregoing object in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be more particularly described and set forth in the appended claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of a receptacle constructed ,in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional viewof one of the joints, and Fig. 3 of a portion of the bottom and'side before being subjected to the action of the rolling dies.
A indicates a tubular body portion, made from paper or some equivalent material, it being understood that it may be made in the form of a cylindrical tube or tapered if preferred. B, the bottom, having an upturned extension 1, bent at 2, having a depending flange 3, forming an inverted U shaped groove 4 surrounding the periphery of the bottom,'the bottom being inserted within the .lower extremityfi' of the body part A, a distance equal to the depth of the flange 3. The bottom B being thus located within the the said bo y portion 5 of the body part and ge 3 of the'bottom B are in a suitable die or machine, and the ex 'tremity 5 and the flange 3 rolled over and inwardly together on a curve, and into the groove 4 between the upturned extension of the bottom B and the extremity 5 of the body part A, and are heldslocked by reason of the bottom portion 7) being pressed against the extremity 5 of the body part, thereby preortion 5 of the body portion A,
then placed an upturned flange 7.
shaped groove 6 having- Extended around the upper end of the body part A is a band 8, the upper edge 9 of which is rolled over inward together with and on a curve with upper edge of the flange 7 of the coverand into the U shaped groove 6, the edge 10 of the cover C being pressed against the upper edge 9-of the band 8, thereby preventing the unrolling of the joint so formed whereby the band 8 is securely held into locking contact with the cover 0, the lower edge 11 of the band 8 forming a depending flange on the said cover, whereby the cover is secured on the upper end of the said container A. 7
It will be observed that in the construction of the container that no other independent means are employed to unite the parts and to retain the arts in united position, the construction of the bottom and top' in their formation providing a recess or groove on the periphery of the flange, so that when theparts are rolled into the grooves they are held in position by reason of the lateral edges of the bottom and cover respectively engaging with the rolled joints and thereby preventing the unrolling thereof.
Paper being to a great extent resilient, the securing together of the parts without some additional element being broughtinto play, has been sought by other inventors in the state of this art, but without accomplishing the result obtained by the single means which I employ in the structure of my device, without the employment pendent additional element to hold the parts together in sealing relation, the essential vfeatures of my invention being the uniting in sealing relation the several parts. of the container without the use of-any independent means or material other than that of which the container is composed.
Slight changes and alterations might be resorted to in'the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A container, comprising a tubular body portion, a bottom provided with an inverted U shaped groove formed in the peri hery thereof, the outer wall of said dgroove onning a depending flange on sai bottom, the said bottom being inserted within the lower part of said body portion, the said lower extremity of said body portion and the said flange being simultaneously rolled over and inwardly on a curve and into the said groove, substantially as described.
2. Acontainer, comprisin a tubular body ortion, a bottom, provide with a groove 'ormed in the periphery thereof the outer wall of said groove formin a depending flange on said bottom, the said bottom being inserted within the lower part of said body Iportion, the said lower extremity of the said ody portion and said flange being rolled on a curve inward and under relative to the said tubular body ortion, and into the said groove in the said bottom, means formed inte ral of the said bottom engagin with the said rolled extremity of the said ody ortion, thereby. preventing the unrolling o the joint so formed, substantially as described.
3. A paper container, comprisin a tubular body portion, a bottom rovided with an inverted U sha ed groove ormed in the periphery thereo the outer wall of said groove forming a depending flange on said bottom, the said bottom bemg inserted within the lower part of said body ortion a distance equal to the depth of said flange, the said lowerextremit of said body portion and flange being ro led together on a curve inward and interiorly relative to the said body portion and into the said groove, means integral with the said bottom engaging with the said rolled lower extremity OI the said body portion, whereby the curl of the said bottom portion and said flange, so formed, is sealed and looked against uncurling, substantially as described.
4.. A container, comprising a tubular body portion, a cover having a groove formed in the pen hery thereof, the outer wall of said inserted within the up or part of said body portion, a paper ban encircling the said ody portion, one extremity of the said band to ether with the said extension on the cover being simultaneously rolled on a curve and into the said groove in the said cover, means formed into ral of the cover engaging with the said roll thereby preventing the unrolling of the joint so formed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
