WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR MAAKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,321, dated February 4, 1902. Application filed May 31, 1901. Serial No. 62,456. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR MAAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a bottle the main body portion of which shall be separable into two parts, whereby the interior of the bottle may be easily got at and thoroughly cleaned, so as to remove all bacteria.
To such ends my invention consists, in substance, of a side and base portion formed of one piece, thejunoture-line where it is to join the other half of the bottle being provided with an inner flange, a packing adjacent to such flange, a corresponding half without a bottom portion provided with a side and bottom groove adapted to receive the flange of the other portion, astrip of packing material in the groove, and means for securing the two portions tightly together at the top.
In the accompanying drawingsfiorming part of this specification, in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of myimproved form of bottle. Fig. 2 is a view of the left-hand portion of such bottle with the other portion removed therefrom looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a like view of the other half of the bottle looking in the opposite direction. Fig. 4 is a View of Fig. 2 in section on the line 00 a: thereof, and Fig. 5 is a bottom View of Fig. 3, while Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a screw-cap for secu ring the two halves of the bottle together.
My improved form of bottle may be formed of any suitable material, usually of glass. In the drawings, 1 designates the larger portion thereof, consisting of an upright half, the side of which at the bottom turns at right angles, as shown at 2, so as to leave such half provided with a base portion 3. All around from oneend to the other theinner contour-line is provided on the inner side with a flange 4, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and in the angle of this flange is a strip of soft elastic packing material, such as india-rubber 5, of
such thickness as to leave the flange 4: pro-- jecting slightly beyond the same, as shown in Fig. 4. The smaller and baseless half 6 of the bottle is formed to fit the open contourline of the bottle as perfectly as possible, and is provided on the edge with a groove 7, adapted to snugly receive the flange 4, in which groove is located a thin ring of packing material 8, of similar material to that of wvhich the strip 5 is formed. The two halves 1 and 6 are provided at the top with grooves 9, which when the two halves are placed together in the position shown in Fig. 1 to form the bottle together constitute an annular exterior screw-thread adapted to receive the threaded securing-cap 10, usually formed of thin sheet metal spun into proper shape, and is provided at the top with the opening or central perforation 11.
The parts being separated and the packingring in position on the parts 1 and 6, it will be seen that if the groove 7 at the point a be shoved down over the flange 4 at b, andif the neck portions of the two halves are then brought together a junction between a and b will act as the end fulcrum-point of the lever, whereby the two packing-rings 4 and 8 will be tightly compressed between the abutting parts, and upon a screwing down of the cap 10 on the neckacompletebottlewillbeformed, suitable to hold any desired liquid without leaking, the same being closed by any suitable stopper inserted in the glass neck of the bottle, as shown at 12 in Fig. 1, and it is evident that it is only necessary to reverse this process for the purpose of separating the parts and cleaning the bottle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bottle consisting of two separable halves, one half of which is provided with a base portion 3, the two being joined together to form a complete bottle along a line horizontal at the point 2 merging gently into a central vertical longitudinal line extending up through the neck portion of the bottle, and means for securing the two halves together, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bottle consisting of two separable halves one half of which'is provided with a base portion 3, the two being joined together to form a complete bottle along a line hori zontal at the point 2 merging gently into a central vertical longitudinal line extending up through the neck portion of the bottle, an exterior screw-thread upon the neck end of the bottle and an imperforate-topped screwcap coacting with said neck-thread to lock the two halves together, substantially as shown and described.
3. A bottle consisting of two separable halves, one half of which is provided with a base portion 3 the two being joined together to form a complete bottle alonga line horizontal at the point 2 merging into a central vertical longitudinal line extending up through the neck portion of the bottle, a flange or flanges upon each of the halves along the line of junction, a strip or strips of packing material which is soft and elastic at the point of junction, and means for securing the two halves together at the neckend, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a bottle separable into two parts along a longitudinal line turned at a right angle at the bottom so as to leave one half with the base portion of a flange upon the junctionline of the base-half upon the inner side of the junction-line, a groove to receive such flange formed in the j unction-line of the base less half, a strip of soft elastic packing material located in the groove of the baseless half, and a strip of like material located outside of the flange of the base-half adjacent thereto,
, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing as my invention I have signedmy name, in pres- T. A. STEWART, F. F. 'IELLER.
