"To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it. known that I, JOSEPH F. RUsLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrenceville, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Packing Butter, &c., of which the following is a specification.

The present invention is an improvement in cases adapted for the packing and transporting of butter, lard, and other analogous articles, andit particularly relates to that class of such cases set fort-h and claimed in Letters Patent No. 268,544, granted to me December 5, 1882.

The invention consists in the novel structure hereinafter fully set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a case formed of two parts, each adapted to hold a quantity of butter or the like and provided with this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of one part of the case, the falseV bottom and securing devices being separated and shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached sectional elevation of a modified form of the device for securing the false bottom in place and sealing the opening in the bottom of the case. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a crate containing a number of such cases, illustrating a mode of shipping a quantity thereof.

As in my said patent, the case A consists, t

essentially, of two parts a. and b, substantially alike in construction and each adapted to constitute the cover or cap for the other. For the sake of cheapness and cleanliness these two parts will preferably be formed of glass or other vitreous material, but may obviously be made of other suitable material molded to the desired form. The two parts are united mouth to mouth by a securing-ring D, that is screw-threaded and adapted to engage with the like threads provided on the exterior surface of the parts o. and b. Each part is preferably conical in shape, the larger diameter at its mouth 12 and the smaller diameter terminating in a bottom 10, having an opening 11 therein. The parts of the case are each provided with a removable false bottom B, which is adapted to iit snugly within the interior of the case against its bottom 10, and is provided with an extension 13, of sufcient length to extend through the opening 11 and a suitable distance beyond, so that it may be engaged by a securing-cap C. The opening is preferably angular in shape, and the extension is provided with a hub 2Q, to lit therein and to prevent the follower turning when the screw-cap is tightened.

In order to effect the complete sealing of the case and prevent the air from entering therein through the opening 11, the cap C is designed to effectually close said opening, and to this end the extension 13 and said cap may be screw-threaded, so that the latter can be firmly abutted against the bottom 10 and around its opening. A tighter joint will be best insured by interposin g a rubber packingring E between the cap and the bottom of the case, from which it will be seen that when the butter is to be removed from one of the parts of the case the cap C may be unscrewed from the extension of the false bottom vB, and when the two parts of the case are detached from each other the false bottom may beemployed to aid the discharge of the butter from its part of the case. w

In some cases it may be found desirable to extend the cap C and provide an extended base c, so that the case may bebetter adapted for standing, as shown in the lower end of Fig.

1 and the detached view, Fig. 4. In some f cases the extended base of the cap may be vprovid ed with flanges 14, adapted to conform with the size of the end of the case, and the edges of these flanges, abutting against the bottom of the case, may provide additional sealing means for excluding the air from the interior of the case, and of course a rubber packing-ring may be employed that is large enough to extend between these flanges and the case. It is of course obvious that the connection between the two parts of the oase will be similarly sealed to exclude air therefrom, and the preferred mode of doing so is to employ a sheet 15, of paper, tin, or other material, stretched over the contents in contact therewith and between the abutting edges of the two parts of the case, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner face of the false bottom may have imparted to it any suitable emblem or device that will upon the removal of the butter have IOO imparted thereto an imprint of such emblem or device. The sides of each of the parts may likewise have imparted to them any desired configuration--such as the iiutes shown in Fig. S-which will leave an imprint upon the butter removed from the case.

Each part of theV case may be of any suitable size-adapted for instance, to hold a quarter, half, or a pound of butter-and from their oval or tapered shape are readily adapted to be packed in crates, as shown in Fig. 5, in a manner similar to that employed in the packing of eggs.

What I claim isl. The herein-described case forY packing butter, &c.,provided with a bottom having a hole therein, a removable imperforate false bottom having an extension adapted to project through and fit the hole in the bottom, and a sealing-cap C, engaging the extension of the false bottom and operating to clamp said false bottom against the bottom of the case, substantially as set forth.

The herein-described case for packing butter, &c., provided with a bottom having an angular hole therein,a removable false bottom having an angular extension adapted to fit the hole in the bottom, and a screw-threaded extension 13, a sealing-cap adapted to en gage the screw-threaded extension of the false bottom, and a packing-ring E, arranged between the cap and the bottom of the case, substantially as set forth.` 4

3. The herein-described case for packing butter, the., composed of two tapering parts connected together by a securing-ring, with hole, and a sealing-cap engaging withthe said extension and having an extended base in the form of a laterally-proj ectin g flange c, Whereby it is adapted for standing, substantially as nset forth.

5. The case for packing butter, the., provided with a bottom having a hole therein, a removable ybottom having an extension proj ecting through the hole in the bottom, and a sealing-cap provided with an extended base in the form of a laterally-projecting flange c, which in turn is provided with a ange 14, which conforms with the size of the end of Vthe case, substantially as set forth.
