CONTAINER. .c
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I,-IVILLIAM I-I. Rosn, a citizen of the United States, and residino' at Jersey City, Hudson County, Sta-te of `ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction large area and is expensive to construct as Y well as expensive for material. My invention consists in constructing the ends of such containers of heavy sheet steel or other metal, as is now customary, and connecting these ends by a very light sheet of metal to form the cylindrical wall of the container. Such light metal is sufficient to prevent leakage and to exclude dampness and also has sufficient tensile strength to prevent sep-r aration of the heads or ends of the container. I give to the side wall the necessaryl lateral strength and stiness by encircling it with a paper or pulp cylinder of considerable thickness. rPhe combination of the thin metal side wall and the Vthick paper-board wall gives to the package greater strength than the usual metal wall and at less cost and .the package preserves its attractive appearance because the side walls are not easily dented in handling, furthermore the pape-rboard exterior is a good base for decora-tion or for the attachment oflabels. I preferably waterproof the paper-board by applying some suitable agent for this purpose, such as tar, parallin, etc. c
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which represents, partly in side view and partly in section, a container of the character Y described.
Referring to this drawing, 10 indicates the bottom, and 11 the top, of the container. The top 11 is shown as provided with a friction lid 12 of usual construction but any suitable top and bottom plates may be used provided they are of suflicient thickness.'

upon the size of the package and the nature of the goods to be shipped, the thickness ofl j Y themetalv being such as to produce a rigid container which will maintain its shape dur- Y ing use. v
lhe ends 10-11 are connected byv a cylindrical metal wall 13 which is suitably connected with themargins lof the top and Y bottom. As shown, the side -wall has out wardly extending marginal folded flanges 14 and the margins of the top and bottom are turned over these flanges and pressed tightly upon them as shown yat 15. The side vwall may be interlocked with the top and bottom plates in any wellknown or suitable manner. It will be evident, however, that by making the side wall thinthe Hanging and turning'of its edges 14 may vbe done with lighter machinery and much easier than if the wall 13 were as thick as the ends 10-,11. A saving in the cost of manufacture is thus edected and it will be levident that a large saving is effected in the cost of sheet metal for the sidewall. Surrounding and'protecting the side Wall 13 is a heavy paper-board-wall 16. This `wall may lbe formed on a mandrel in one of the usual machines for makingpaper tubes and cylinders and slipped on to the side wall 13 before the top 11 `is applied thereto. This is the preferred method. 4I may, however, use the body of the container as a mandrel and wind thereon paper' properly treated with adhesiveV untilv the desired thickness is attained. In either case the paper-board wall Y 16is constructed of suicient y.thickness to support laterally the metal side wallv 13 and Vto support and space the heads, that is, to
prevent any tendency to telescope or collapse the metalside wall. As previously stated thev metal sidewall 13 may be made of very ness to prevent leakage and on account of kthe large circumferential dimension of such side wall quite thin metal will have sufcient tensile strength to prevent the heads fromY pulling apart.
Patent is: Y
A container having heads -composed Vof metal which isjrelatively thick andv suf-v i thin material, as it requires very little thick-V heads and prevent leakage and the paper. Wall affording lateralrstrength and., longitudinal stiffness and serving to protect and 10 'ed support the thin metal Wall, for thepurpOSe set forth. n
