To all whom 'it may concern:

Be itknown that I, GEORGE W. TEASDALE a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri,

-have invented certain new and luseful Improvements in Cartons, ofv which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specltication.

My invention relates to that character of f containers made of pasteboard or heavy paper, an example of which is to be found Ain Letters Patent of the United States, N o. 899,922, issued to me September '29, .1908,

' and upon which my present invention is in the nature of an improvement.

The carton shown and described in the.' patent mentioned is a very deslrable one for the reasons pointed out in the patent; but due to the arched lining sheet therein being permanently attached atv its en ds to the shell of the carton, it is impractical to foldl the empty carton for shipment previous to its being putinto use as a container, and inasmuch as the folding of the carton for shipment when empty saves expense of shipment, I have provided a construction that will permit of such folding and which construction constitutes the subject -matter of my present application. V

A further object of my present invention is to provideme'ans whereby the sides and ends of the carton may be held from collapsing when unfolded for use, and also whereby air, moisture, and rays of light .may

. be approximately excluded from the interior of the carton to prevent their access thereinto to the detriment of the merchandise packed in the carton. l

Figure I is in part a perspective View and in part a vertical cross section of my carton. Fig. II is a vertical longitudinal section through the carton. Fig. III is a horizontal section. Fig. IV is a cross section of the carton in folded or collapsed condition. Fig. V is a cross section near one end of the carton in a folded condition.

In the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the shell of my carton which is provided at its ends with outer closing Haps 2 adapted to be folded onto each other and secured together in any suitable manner, such as by the provision of tongues upon one flap that are adapted to enter into engagement with the lflap mating therewith in a forcing orvlining sheet 5 that is attached at one end tothe carton shell, but is free of connection with said shell at its other end. This lming sheet is adapted tobe arched or lbowed into the condition illustrated in the drawings by means to be presently described whereby the sheet is caused to serve a purf pose similar to a like sheet in my patent hereinbefore mentioned.

' 3 designates a-guard or presser sheet that is located within one endof the carton shell and is provided with

4 and 4, one of said flanges, for instance at 4, being secured in a suitable manner to a side of the carton shell and being preferably pasted thereto. The other flange is free of connec tion to the carton shell, and, therefore, the guard or presser sheet may extend outward through the open end of the carton shell when the carton is folded and be pressed into the carton shell to hold said shell extended when it is unfolded, and also serve to press against the free ends of the lining sheet 5 whereby said lining sheet is arched, as seen in the drawings, and maintained in an arched condition. It will b e seen that inasmuch'as the lining sheet is free of pressure when the guard or presser sheet is` extended through the open end-of the carton shell, said lining sheet may lie flatly against the walls of the Shell and permit folding of the carton.

7 and 8, (see Fig. II,) one of these flanges, for instance flange 7, being asted or otherwise secured to an end wall ot the carton shell, and the other flan e being free of connection to the carton shell. l/Vhen the carton is folded, the free end of the auxiliary guard or presser `sheet extends outwardly from the carton shell andthe end secured to the shell remains intact therewith; and when the carton is unfolded, the auxiliary guard or presser sheet occupies a position within the carton shell and rests against the guard or presser sheet 3, (as seen in Figs. I andv II,) serving to hold the sheet 3 in its proper position when the closing flaps of the carton are secured in their closed positions.

As will be seen by the construction described, the guard or

presser sheets

3 and 6 serve to exert pressure against the lining sheet 5 at its free ends to maintain this sheet in a bulged condition, as desired, whereas when -said carton or presser sheets are extended from the interior of the carton shell, the carton may be readily folded due to the lining sheet eing at this time ermitted to move outwardly and -into c ose contact with the'walls of the carton shell. It will be further seen that the ard or

I claim: 1. Ay carton comprising a shell, a main guard sheet hinged to said shell and adapted sheet Within. said shell attached at one of its ends to the shell and free of connection to the shell Vat its'A other end, and a guard orv resser sheet adapted to bear against the 'i ree end of said lining sheet.

4. A carton com rising a shell, a linin sheet within said s ell attached atA one en to the shell and free of connection with the shell at its other end, and a guard or presser sheet hinged to said shell and adapted to be folded into said lshell to bear against the free end ofpsaid lining sheet, substantially as described.

5.
